Astral travel and astral projection are often defined the same but there are distinctive differences between the two. We will go more in-depth on the differences between them on another post but for now we will treat them as if they mean the same. Astral traveling is a term applied to traveling outside of the physical body while in a trance state, deep meditation or sleep. People are able to do this by shifting their consciousness from their physical bodies to their astral bodies which is associated with the astral plane.

The Astral body can assume various forms but is usually perceived in the form of the physical body. Animal forms are sometimes preferred for astral travel however the astral body taking the form of a wolf, cat, mouse, hawk or other animal for its astral travel is sometimes called shape shifting and is the origin of legends about werewolves, etc.

Astral travel is a fairly advanced spiritual discipline but it can also occur spontaneously without the person knowing it while sleep. A lot of people who suffer from sleep paralysis are in truth natural born astral projectors but probably haven’t received proper training. This is where the myth of a "witch riding your back" originated from. Ancient Kemet spoke on people naturally astral projecting while they slept, this aspect of the soul is known as the Ba.

Astral traveling consciously can be achieved by a number of different methods. There is a certain chakra that can be activated in order to achieve astral travel. Merkaba meditation can be used which is still chakra related but it’s the activation of more than one specific chakra. One can also perform certain rituals specifically for astral travel and then go into meditation. Aura meditation methods can shift you into astral projection or one can use the Kundalini, which can project you onto the astral realm. There is more than one method, I have used several myself, but no matter the technique used, it should be taken seriously and it is not something to be played with just for fun. -Indigo
