We’ve been asked to contact exes, prior employers, and even an individuals bank on their behalf to obtain their information. We thought we should make some things clear.

Always review your tax return before signing and submitting it. At the very least, check your name, Social Security number, address and bank account numbers. Also, give the final outcome — whether a refund or tax bill — a gut check. If it’s far off from what you expected, ask questions. Changes in tax laws and changes in your financial life can dramatically affect the outcome of your tax return from one year to the next, but if something catches your eye, ask your preparer for an explanation.

In the event of an error, you’re on the hook, though a reputable preparer will probably help you determine the next steps in resolving your issue (we’ve sat on the phone for more hours than we can count to help our clients with their prior years concerns). And though the likelihood of an audit is slim, the IRS will contact you, not your preparer, because you provided the information to the preparer and signed off. And though you may have hired a tax professional to file your taxes, that fee likely did not include audit defense.
