The Dark Side of Martial Arts
No matter how you want to sugarcoat it, all Martial Arts were designed for the purpose of control through various levels of violence.
Inevitably, this “control through violence” often attracts people with insecurities and other forms of deep seeded suffering, because it is such a good tool for protecting one’s Ego Mask through acts of domination and violence. Anger, and the desire to hurt others because of their intrinsic hurt, is often disguised as the virtue of “justice” when really it is an excuse for revenge, displacement and transference.
And the more the person trains, the more this Ego Mask is reinforced until the person no longer sees his real self but perpetually spiral deeper into anger and self destruction. Any threat to their Ego Mask delusion (including this post) results in anger, disgust, rejection and condemnation.
Of course, not all Martial Artists are self deluded, some of my Martial Art Brothers and Sisters are the most compassionate and enlightened people I have met; but you have to agree there are some real as****es amongst us.
We cannot be true Martial Artists without knowing ourselves. We have to always self examine to avoid turning into just a thug who can punch hard.
Exciting changes for our limited access small group lessons. New hours and location. Please call or message for more information!

Thank you Sifu Mark for letting us join you, it was a great time!
It's been a little over a year and recovery has taken a bit longer than expected, which is the reason things on the page have been slow. I have been easing back into training over the past couple of months and my hand is feeling pretty good and it looks like everything is functioning pretty well! (Doc says the Kung Fu training the past 12 years has helped with that!)
Still have a ways to go, but club training will be ramping back up next month sometime after the summer heat starts dying down... Anyone who is interested in a new focus in training, please let me know!!
Thank you Sifu Mark Jones for sharing this!

Status update: Training has been on hold the past 3 months while I heal from a serious hand injury (6 nights in trauma ICU with 2 operations, followed by therapy 3x/week). Progress is slow but steady and things are healing well.
I have a third procedure coming up at the end of the month and then I should be on to a very good recovery and hopefully continue full training before the new year! Thanks to my students for being patient, and to Sifu Mark Jones for helping continue their progress & training while I am recovering!

Very good class last night! Mat & Hector dove further into 2-arm kiu sau exploring how to defend the '4 corners' of the box and use HFY's counter-grappling against wrestlers/grapplers. They had some struggle, which is expected for something new. But they both demonstrated their determination and ability to pick up new things - a sign the basics are sinking in! great job!
For anyone interested!

Great class last night before we wrap up 3 years in the park to take a much needed month off. Mat & Hector put the gloves on, and with the help of Sibak Dylan put what we have been training to the test. While there is always room for improvement, their understanding of Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun concepts/principles, tactics and body methods is starting to show. Good work guys, and hope you continue to practice thru the month, and start back in November with an even greater focus, in a new location! ;)
Great class last night. We put on the gloves/mouth pieces and further explored centerline Kiu Sau engagements with Biu Jong Sau and offense/defense against various combinations attacks. Everyone is coming along nicely and learning how important it is to occupy space on Centerline with fwd energy/intent vs. chasing hands. Great job guys (& girls)!!

Getting some practice in with my new camera and 2 semi-willing subjects while working on some single hand taan/b**g/fook chi sau. Good training Dylan Fitzpatrick and Oscar Caceres - and thanks for being patient with me!
An interesting article heaven human & earth (tien yan dei) concepts in Wing Chun, a discussion with the author on the differences in philosophies regarding the variations of this term, as well as information on how they relate to the Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun lineage.

Another great class tonight! We covered further 4-gate defenses against jabs, crosses, hooks/round punches. The group is making good progress, which was evident when they started mixing up the attacks with more random/live energy. Also contrasted with some kiu sau engagements at the end.
One key to take away from the class - always occupy space on center first!
Good class tonight, covered 4 gate defenses & basic kiu sau engagements against straight jab/cross attacks. It was cold, but the guys suck it out!
Jan 8 - Working on 4-gate defenses against looping/round punches. Good energy and a great class to start out the new year!
Will be working on updating the page with a new pictures and some video clips in the next few months, as well as getting the redflowerboxing.com site updated and back on line - Stay tuned!
We had a few hic-ups with scheduling the last couple of weeks, but classes are still going well! Tuesdays we have been focusing on why we stay tru to the centerline and don't give up space thru different uses of b**g sau. Thursday San Sau classes have been focusing on getting people to move more freely and react vs. thinking. Looking forward to next week's skill challenges in both classes!
Sorry for my short notice, but HFY Workshop with GM Gee on November 11th! Anyone is welcome to attend, or a the least stop by and meet GM Garrett Gee.
