Super Star Soldier was released on this day in 1990 on the PC Engine and in 1991 for the TurboGrafx-16. It was re-released on the Wii in North America in 2006 and was ported as a mobile game in 2007, but it's just not the same!

The game synopsis:

"Move fast and blast! It's a nonstop explosion of fire power and you're streaking through space, right in the middle of it! The Brains Cult you once defeated is back, badder than ever. But your finger's on the trigger of an incredible new techno-attack! Scorch the Scorpion with a nuclear a sting. Fire your heat-seeking sidewinders. Then power-up to launch your doomsday Super Bomb! Blow those Brains out and save the galaxy. Then challenge your friends with a special competition time mode to prove who the Super Star really is!"

If we ever get our hands on this system at Endgame, this should really be the first title we find.

Everyone who even has a passing knowledge of The Lord of the Rings knows the Balrog, specifically The Flame of Udun, the Balrog that slumbered in the Mines of Moria.

In the earliest versions of Dungeons and Dragons, many monsters were lifted wholecloth from properties like Lord of the Rings, including Hobbits and Balrogs.

These names were later changed by Gary Gygax and the TSR team to avoid being sued by the Tolkien estate.

Hobbits became Halflings, and the powerful Balrog became the Balor, a incredibly strong and chaotically evil demon of the Abyss.

While the creatures have since been differentiated by their lore and powers, they do still bear a very similar appearance.
