HOW YOUR TAXES COULD IMPACT YOUR HOMEBUYING CHANCES:
Writing off expenses can do wonders for your tax return. By subtracting your expenses from your gross income, you show a lower net income, thereby reducing your tax liability. But be careful because it could be costly when applying for a mortgage loan.
The relationship between your total income and liabilities is extremely important for lenders when determining whether or not to make your mortgage loan. If you showed a high income one year and low income another year, the lower income tax returns would bring down your average income.
So showing less income to offset a housing payment can be tricky when seeking home loan financing. It then gets even trickier for self-employed individuals, because mortgage lenders use a 24-month averaged income.
A Paycheck Checkup can help you see if you're withholding the right amount of tax from your paycheck.
Be sure to check your withholdings annually and when life changes occur, such as marriage, childbirth, adoption and buying a home.
A tool that can be helpful to estimate federal taxes being withheld is the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator.

Business owners don't always understand how to categorize expenses properly. To be deductible, a business expense must be both ordinary and necessary.
An ordinary expense is one that is common and accepted in your industry. A necessary expense is one that is helpful and appropriate for your trade or business.
