Happy 70th birthday to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor! The first Latina and the third woman to serve as a Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, Sotomayor was born in 1954 to Puerto Rican-born parents living in the Bronx, New York City. Her family had very limited financial means but placed a strong emphasis on the importance of education. Focused on a legal career from early in life, Sotomayor pursued her dream in spite of a series of challenging obstacles, including the death of her father when she was a young child and living with Type 1 diabetes since childhood. She also developed a strong sense of identity, and pride in her Nuyorican background. Sotomayor's current role as Supreme Court Justice was preceded by a lengthy and distinguished career within the judicial system. Today, she is viewed by many as a model for young people of what you can do with hard work and determination.
Sonia Sotomayor has told her life story in two books for children: "Turning Pages: My Life Story" for ages 5 to 9 (https://www.amightygirl.com/turning-pages) and "The Beloved World of Sotomayor" for ages 10 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/the-beloved-world-of-sonia-sotomayor)
She is also the author of an empowering children's book about disability that celebrates the different abilities that make each of us unique, "Just Ask" for ages 4 to 9 at https://www.amightygirl.com/just-ask
To introduce children to this trailblazing Supreme Court Justice, we also recommend the picture book "I Am Sonia Sotomayor" for ages 4 to 8 (https://www.amightygirl.com/i-am-sonia-sotomayor), the chapter book "She Persisted: Sonia Sotomayor" for ages 6 to 9 (https://www.amightygirl.com/she-persisted-sonia-sotomayor), and the illustrated biography “Who is Sonia Sotomayor?" for ages 8 to 12 (https://www.amightygirl.com/who-is-sonia-sotomayor)
For adult readers interested in learning more about this trailblazer, check out Sotomayor's fascinating memoir, "My Beloved World," at http://amzn.to/1phJ1IW
And for an excellent book to help tween girls develop a strong sense of their own self-worth, we highly recommend "The Confidence Code for Girls," for ages 8 to 12, at https://www.amightygirl.com/the-confidence-code-for-girls

The Saxon Cats have invaded the Mesquite Fine Arts Center. Drop by and see them to support the Women's History and Culture Center - Mesquite, Nevada 2022. Who is Saxon?
Saxon Cat, a fictional or symbolic representation rather than a historical figure, embodies the spirit and resilience of the women's suffrage movement. As a metaphorical figure, Saxon Cat represents the determination and courage of the women who fought tirelessly for their right to vote. Much like a cat, known for its independence and persistence, Saxon Cat symbolizes the unyielding resolve of suffragettes who faced opposition, ridicule, and even violence in their quest for equality. Through marches, protests, and eloquent advocacy, the suffragettes, personified by Saxon Cat, played a crucial role in challenging societal norms and securing the passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in the United States in 1920. Saxon Cat, as a symbol, continues to inspire new generations to pursue justice and equality with the same unwavering spirit.

Carson Pickett made history as the first soccer player with a limb difference to play for the US Women's National Team! The 30-year-old defender, who was born without the lower half of her left arm, currently plays for Racing Louisville; in 2022, she made her debut with the USWNT in a match against Colombia.
Carson, pictured here with a young fan, says that she hopes that her example will raise awareness and acceptance of people with limb differences. "While I know that I am confident and comfortable with showing my arm, I know there are so many people in the world who aren't. The feeling of being different and the anxiety of not fitting in is something that I have been through. Wearing sweatshirts in the dead heat of summer to hide my arm," she wrote on social media. "I hope to encourage anyone who struggles with their limb difference to not be ashamed of who they are."
For soccer-loving Mighty Girls, we've featured books, clothing, toys, and gear about girls and women's love of the game in our blog post "The Beautiful Game" at https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=15478

This beloved novel has also been adapted into a fun chapter book series starring Aven, an armless Mighty Girl who loves solving mysteries, which begins with "Aven Green, Sleuthing Machine" for ages 6 to 9 at https://www.amightygirl.com/aven-green-sleuthing-machine
For an inspiring memoir by Jordan Reeves, a Mighty Girl growing up with a limb difference, we recommend "Born Just Right" for ages 8 to 11 at https://www.amightygirl.com/born-just-right
There are also several fantastic books about Mighty Girls who pursue their dreams after leg amputations: "Rescue and Jessica" for ages 5 to 9 (https://www.amightygirl.com/rescue-and-jessica), “The Running Dream” for ages 12 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/the-running-dream), and “A Time To Dance” for ages 13 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/a-time-to-dance)
