Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestras 08/28/2024

Earlier this year the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra came to Steger Law Firm for assistance with their exempt organization status. As sometimes happens, GNOYO's exempt status was revoked for failure to file their Form 990.

Steger Law Firm submitted an application for retroactive reinstatement and two weeks later the IRS retroactively reinstated GNOYO's exempt organization status. While we cannot guaranty such results in every case, if you know of a tax exempt organization that has issues with their exempt organization status, please let them know Steger Law Firm may be able to help.

As a side note, John Steger was elected to GNOYO's board in March 2024 and was appointed treasurer. GNOYO is a wonderful organization that provides young musicians the opportunity to participate in a high-quality, full orchestra program to significantly improve performance and ensemble skills, while developing professional attitudes and discipline. GNOYO also empowers participants to take initiative in their schools and community and to pursue individual and team excellence in all life endeavors.

If you know of a young musician who might like to participate, or if you would like to attend a wonderful orchestral concert, or if you would like to donate, please visit https://gnoyo.org/ for more information.

Thank you.

Steger Law Firm also assists clients with their 501(c)(3) tax exempt entities. A client came to us recently and wanted to form a public charity. We submitted the Form 1023 on May 1. Today, we received a the determination letter wherein the IRS determined that the client's nonprofit entity is exempt from tax under §501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

If you or anyone you know wants to form a private foundation or a public charity, or if you currently operate a tax exempt entity and need advice, please contact us for assistance.

We hope you all are enjoying tax season. We are!!!

Recently, a few people have come to us for advice because the Louisiana Department of Revenue has been putting holds on driver's licences due to outstanding taxes or because people have not filed their taxes in years. If you have not filed taxes in a few years, if you have received a notice from the state of Louisiana that your license will be suspended, or if your license is already suspended due to tax issues, please contact us so we can see if we are able to assist you in resolving your tax issues.

We would like to announce two client wins. Recently SLF assisted a client with successfully entering into an Offer-in-Compromise with the IRS. After successfully completing the Offer-in-Compromise, this taxpayer will be able to move on without crushing tax debt over their head.

Another client was being audited by a parish sales tax collector. After working with the auditor and the client, the auditor has agreed to issue a no change audit, which means this client will owe no additional tax as a result of the audit.

If you or anyone you know is being audited by the IRS or by the state of Louisiana, or needs business law advice, Steger Law Firm is here to help.

We recently attended a Continuing Legal Education and found this quote interesting:

“This yet another sad situation of disputes between siblings that arise when control of a family business changes hands from generation to the next. Such intrafamily struggles and contention become so volatile that relations are strained or broken and attorneys are brought in to litigate family disputes, was likely the impetus for the coining of the phrase ‘turning over in their grave’ regarding deceased parents relative to unseemly disputes between their children.”

We have successfully assisted numerous clients with both business plans and succession plans.

If you have not drafted a business or estate plan, please give us a call so we can help you avoid "turning in your grave."

In the past year and a half or so, we have come across three (3) notarial last will and testaments that were invalid. The Lousiaina Civil Code articles governing notarial testaments are straightforward. The attorneys who drafted those last will and testaments either used bad forms or just did not know what they were doing .

An invalid will can cause many problems, the most important of which is not having your last wishes honored.

If you need a last will and testament, or need to update your will, please contact us for assistance. We have assisted many clients in estate planning and succession matters, do not use forms, and we have read the articles governing notarial testaments many times. (The last time was 2 days ago when we came across the most recent notarial will that did not comply with Louisiana law.)
