It was February 1973!. FIFTY ONE YEARS AGO. I was standing on a ladder, painting the Alterman Audio sign shown in this photo. A car drove up, and I sold that guy an Acoustic Research AR-XA turntable.
That was the first official sale of Alterman Audio.

New Year 2024 Resolution: To post something on Facebook almost every day... or at least try. And these posts will not be all advertising the great audio and video products we sell, but interesting things folks might not hear about elsewhere.

THE EARLIEST KNOWN STEREO RECORDINGS

Sound Recording was first done by Thomas Edison in 1977 using wax cylinders. But, even back then people wanted better sound. In 1881 the Theaterphone was a French subscription service tha delivered live performance in simulated stereo over phone lines. But, these performances were not recorded.
Indiana University's Archives of Traditional Music found music recorded using two cylinders for stereo sound, made in 1901. The music was from China and was the first known stereo recording and two separate cylinder recordings were made simultaneously, thus it was stereo sound.
These recordings were not made for the sake of stereo sound or even from a music aspect, but a anthropolgist, sent to China by the American Museum of Natural History.
Thousands of cylinders were recorded fo study the Chinese people by Berthold Laufer.
These were copied to tape and more recently transferred to digital audio. Using Pro Tools they found some of these recordings were done and therefold were actually stereo. The timing was corrected of the two different playback machines, using digital speed adjustments.

It was October 1, 1982, 41 years ago that Sony introduced the Compact Disc player In Japan. 41 years. While people are buying vinyl records again, and people are streaming music over the internet, the Compact Disc still remains a viable form of music listening. Ironically, affordable CD players are few, but high quality audiophile grade CD players made, sold and offered by dozen s of brands and sold around the world. There are at least 30 brands and hundreds of models of high quality CD players sold with retail prices over $1000.
Some people insist that vinyl records sound better, other disagree. But, millions of people stream music from Pandora, Spotify, AppleMusic, Amazon Music whose sound quality is no where close to what a CD offered 41 years ago. In fact, music streaming services offer digital music files that have only 10% of the digital data that the original CD has. Can you hear the difference.... YES.

SEPTEMBER 1977. SONY ANNOUNCES THE PCM-1 ... THE WORLD'S FIRST DIGITAL AUDIO RECORDER.
ALTERMAN AUDIO HAD IT LONG BEFORE THAT. A SONY JAPANESE ENGINEER CAME TO NEW ORLEANS AND BROUGHT A PROTOTYPE OF THE PCM-1 AND LEFT WITH US.
THIS UNIT WEIGHS ALMOST 50 POUNDS. You feed an audio signal into it, it had both mic and line level, and it chopped up the music into samples and recorded that digital binary data on a Sony Betamax video recorder attached to it.
I made dozens and dozens of PCM recordings years before the Compact Disc was introduced.
I still have a Sony PCM-1 in the store you can come look at.

This is me and the Wilson Audio WAMM ... Wilson Audio Modular Monitor. I don't sell these, but know someone that does, so many I could get you a discount. They sell for $829,000 a pair. They are heavy. Each of the boxes with a speaker driver in them can be moved back and forth for critical time alignment. I have never heard these. This is me at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in Denver, but they were not playing them. But, Dave Wilson's first WAMM consisted of electrostatic elements and two KEF oblong woofers. The later versions of these used the same JansZen electrostatic elements that were used in the JansZen speakers I sold back in the 1970s and early 1980s, till the company closed. But, I have hundreds of those tweeters and have built hybrid JansZens that rival the original WAMM which used the same exact ESL tweeter. Come in and give them a listen.

Tom Devesto, founder of Como Audio, teamed up with Henry Kloss back in the Advent days, and I have known him ever since. Alterman Audio was the first brick and motar store to carry Como Audio radios.
Sadly, due to the IC chip shortage, Como Audio has been unable to manufacture radios, and has shut down. Tom recently told me he was trying to set up a US manufacturing facility, but not having much luck.

Another famous Alterman Audio customer has passed away. Ann Rice was most famous for Interview with a Vampire novel. She sold over 40 million books. She complained that Tom Cruise was wrong for the part. She was given an advance pressing of the movie on LaserDisc. She didn't have a LaserDisc player, so she called Alterman Audio. We delivered her one on a holiday when we were closed. The late Rodney Davis brought it to her and hooked it up to the Pioneer Elite TV and Pioneer Elilte AV receiver we had already sold and installed for her. Ater seeming the movie she commended how Tom Cruise totally got into the character and loved his portrayal. All on Alterman Audio equipment.

We hear every day about the chip shortage. Well, I thought I would post some details about AKM who makes chips for audio. There was a fire that lasted 3 days. The factory was in Nobeka City in China. AKM stands for Asahi Kashi Microsystems. They make ADA (analog to Digital) chips, DAC (digital to analog) chips, and ASRCs. These type of chips are used in all types of home audio and Pro audio equipment. Our top selling Sony ES receiver was discontinued because it used chips from this company. (Other ES receivers are still made though). The fire broke out October 20, 2020. Four hundred employees were evacuated. Many parts of the building collapsed. Another fire broke out of October 22 on the fifth floor. The fire was not put out till the evening of October 23rd. AKM parts already in warehouses are being sold for dramatically hire prices. Production to resume could take months and months. It was reported that the IC chip design called a mask might be farmed out to other chip makers to fill the gap. Many models are being re-engineered with different chips, which is no simple process.
