Fire Department Flushing Hydrants Citywide in May
Advisory: May 2024
What to Expect
There are over 1,400 fire hydrants in Miami Beach. It is likely that you will see Fire Dept. personnel in your neighborhood tending to the fire hydrants. Each hydrant flush takes less than five minutes.
Flushing of the hydrants may stir up sediment in the water mains and temporarily cause some water discoloration nearby.
If you experience cloudy water coming from faucets in your home or business, please know that the sediment is likely related to the hydrant flushing activities nearby. Remedy this by running an outdoor hose spigot, bathtub faucet or sink (all the way on) for a short period of time (two to five minutes) until the water coming out is clear again.
It is also recommended to remove and rinse off the small screens found on most kitchen and bathroom faucets to clear small debris particles.
Hydrant flushing occurs during regular Fire Dept. shift hours and does not impact emergency response times. If at any point an emergency call comes in, the fire fighters will pause flushing activities immediately to respond to the emergency.
Here is your chance to get involved
