The Miami-Dade Water & Sewer Department (WASD) is conducting its yearly chlorine purge from Monday, September 9 through Sunday, September 22, 2024.

County residents may experience some chlorine smell and/or taste in their water during this short-term period. This is normal, since free chlorine has a slightly different taste and smell than combined chlorine. The temporary change does not cause adverse health effects and is a necessary part of WASD’s ongoing efforts to provide safe drinking water to Miami-Dade County residents.

What to expect:
Slight chlorine taste and/or odor in the water.
Slight decrease in pressure when hydrants are being flushed in your area.
No adverse effects to pets (Except for tropical fish).
Temporary possibility of higher levels of trihalomethanes. (Will not result in any adverse effects).
Temporary discoloration of the water, as water rushing out of hydrant removes rust and sediment particles from pipes.

This water is chlorinated, disinfected and may be safely consumed. If you own an aquarium, please make any necessary adjustments to the treatment of your tank's water during this temporary chlorination change. Users of dialysis machines are advised to seek professional advice as to the method of removing chlorine residuals during this time.

A heat advisory is in effect for Miami Beach until 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 4.

Two cooling sites will be open to the public at the following locations on July 4:

Altos Del Mar Park Cooling Tents
76 Street & Collins Avenue
2 PM – 9 PM

Art Deco Welcome Center
1001 Ocean Drive
9 AM – 2 PM

The cooling tents in Altos Del Mar Park will offer shade, misting fans and emergency cooling chairs and assistance for those in need.

Please drink lots of water, wear sunscreen and call 911 if you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

In addition, remember to check on pets frequently and try to walk them in the morning or evening, before the sun is at its hottest.

Drive-through sandbag distribution sites will be located on the surface lots at 2111 Collins Avenue and 225 79 Street today, June 14 from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m.

These locations have a machine that fills sandbags and there is a limit of 4 per household. Available while supplies last. Residents are required to show proof of residency via a government-issued ID or utility bill.

Remember, taking sand from our beaches is prohibited. The sand and dunes are the city's first line of defense against storm surge. After this rain event, do not empty sandbags onto beaches or into drains. It's also advisable to keep them for the remainder of hurricane season.

To reinforce safety in preparation for hurricane season, the Fontainebleau hotel will demobilize two cranes from its construction site. This operation will be completed in two phases as indicated below:

Phase I: June 10 – June 14
Collins Avenue (northbound) will have two lanes closed between 41–44 streets.

Phase II: June 24 – June 28
Indian Creek Drive (northbound) between 43 Street and 44 Street will be closed. Vehicles will be detoured to 43 Street eastbound and then northbound on Collins Avenue.

The aforementioned lane closures will be in effect Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. Drivers are encouraged to use the MacArthur or 79 Street causeways to minimize traffic delays.
