Ok, so what’s the history of South Beach?

Our story starts with a coconut farm—or the attempt to open one, at least. In 1870, the Lum family bought up a slim sandbar with wild mangroves for 25 cents and plans to grow palm trees. They weren’t very successful, so their plantation ended up in the hands of John Collins. He eventually amassed five miles of land along where his namesake street now runs and was able to make a good living off of his coconuts and exotic fruits.

If it were up to Collins, South Beach would still be a coconut farm, but his children had loftier dreams to turn this plantation into a tourist destination. They convinced their dad to let them build a bridge to the mainland (what’s now the scenic Venetian Causeway), only they ran out of money halfway through. Enter Carl Fischer, inventor of the modern car headlight. He took a gamble and financed the completion of the bridge in exchange for 200 acres of land. By 1913, the same year Joe of the famed Joe’s Stone Crab kicked off his career, people like the Lummus brothers were buying up plots of land. And on March 26, 1915, the mentioned parties got together and incorporated the Town of Miami Beach.

In the 1920s, the millionaires started moving in. Then came the architects who gave the island its Art Deco facade. By the 1950s, South Beach was the most glamorous beach town in America; you had the Rat Pack performing at the Fontainebleau. You had well-to-do snowbirds diving into the Raleigh’s pool after a morning shopping up and down Lincoln Road, the Fifth Avenue of the South. In 1964, Jackie Gleason moved his studios down here and the Beatles filmed one of their first American TV performances for the Ed Sullivan Show at the now-torn-down Deauville.

MIAMI – Miami Beach is testing a new ferry service connecting the Venetian Marina in Downtown Miami and Sunset Harbor in South Beach.

Admission to the ferry crossing Biscayne Bay is free for Miami Beach residents until the end of July when it will be available at a discount.

Mahsa Iranipour, a South Beach resident, doesn’t own a car. She said the scenic views while riding the ferry make the short trip feel like a tour.

“With inflation everything is so expensive, so having this as an option would definitely be really beneficial,” Iranipour said while riding the ferry on Monday.

Capt. David Guthrie mans the helm of the Poseidon ferry. He hopes the cities will partner and find the funds to set up a more complete ferry system.

“Other major cities — San Francisco, New York — they all have major ferry systems on their waterways, and I think Miami needs it,” Guthrie said.
Miami Beach officials hope the service will help reduce traffic on the MacArthur Causeway from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., every day. In August, one-way fare tickets are $5 for Miami Beach residents.

The one-way fare is $12 for the public and $6 for seniors. There is also a weekly commuter pass for $30 and a monthly commuter pass for $120.

Miami-Dade County Golden Passport holders and children 12 years old and younger sail for free.
