Would you like to join the fight for clean water and healthy beaches?
The Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) is our volunteer-run, water testing, education and advocacy program. Through this program, we educate the community and provide valuable water quality information to anyone recreating on the beach or in the bay.
Our dedicated volunteers collect samples from a total of 24 sites in beach, canal and bay locations every Thursday throughout the year and process them at our BWTF lab in Miami Beach.
We are looking to grow our pool of water collector volunteers with a special focus on the Key Biscayne area. If you are interested, please email [email protected].

π Our SEAS (Swim, Explore, Act, Surf.) Program is a 3-part, Surfrider Miami funded program thatβs a path to advocacy and opportunity for the community as a whole.
π We teach swimming as the "gateway skill", as we know the ability to swim and feel safe and comfortable in the water opens up amazing opportunities for study, employment, sport, leisure and advocacy.
π We are now in search of a passionate, dedicated volunteer who can be the "right hand" to our SEAS Program Lead, and help grow the SEAS program throughout the county. If you are interested, please email [email protected].
ποΈ Our beaches are the entryway to our ocean and other waterways. They are where we live, where we work, and where we come to play.
π We believe beaches should be accessible to everyone!
π£ This is why our network of experts, volunteers, and members work with local decision-making bodies to evaluate each beach and waterway access issue that arises.

β Did you know that anything that gets thrown onto our streets will ultimately end in the storm drain and make its way into our bay and ocean?
π For example, cigarette butts are toxic and made of plastic, so they should not be littered. They are the number one collected item during beach clean ups. In fact, smoking is prohibited at Miami-Dade public beaches.
βοΈ Through our Ashcan Program, we have collected over 500K cigarette butts* since the program's inception with only 100 ashcans throughout the South Beach entertainment district and North Beach.
We are dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the worldβs ocean, waves and beaches - for all people.

β΄οΈ What a great SEAS Day on the Bay we had with our 2nd cohort from Belafonte TACOLCY Center! A BIG THANK YOU also to our friends from Miami Waterkeeper for their help!
π Not only did our 10 attendees learn about our beautiful Biscayne Bay, but they also participated in water quality testing and a beach cleanup at Spoil Island!
π Their environmental education session discussed:
-Bay habitats
-Water testing for pH
-Turbidity
-Plastics and plastic pollution
-Aluminum choices
-Corals and the danger of high temperatures
-Seagrass and oxygen
π They learned that staying engaged and being good environmental stewards is important.

What do we want? Renewable Energy!
When do we want it? NOW!
Renewable, non-polluting ocean energy refers to sustainable means of generating electrical power that do not involve burning fossil fuels. Potential sources include:
π Wind
π Waves
π Tides & Ocean Currents
We believe utilizing technologies like these may offer important benefits as renewable sources of energy that will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases AND provide economic development through a cutting-edge industry for coastal communities like ours. Talk about a win-win.
π Meet Karen Berber Futernick, Miami-Dade County Liaison at Surfrider Foundation Miami Chapter.
π She started volunteering for Surfrider Foundation Miami four years ago when local beaches were closed due to contamination/high bacteria levels. She didn't want to complain. She wanted to be part of the solution!
π Karen created and currently leads our SEAS Program, which teaches children and adults how to swim, surf, feel comfortable in the water, and be environmental stewards.
π She is now in search of a passionate, dedicated volunteer who can be her "right hand", and help grow the SEAS program throughout the county. If you are interested, please email [email protected].
In South Florida, itβs always summer, which means beach days all year round!
Here are some tips to have an eco-friendly beach day:
ποΈ Bring a zero-waste beach day lunch or snack.
ποΈ Avoid using plastic bags and single-use plastic utensils.
ποΈ Donβt feed wildlife at the beach (our food isnβt good for them).
ποΈ Use reef-safe sunscreen.
ποΈ Make sure no trash is left behind.
"Even a tiny little wave it's usually traveled from maybe hundreds or thousands of miles away, so it has a lot of energy. You just have to figure out how to use that energy." - Kelly Slater π€
Happy !
What's not so happy is that more than 170 trillion plastic particles weighing roughly 2 million metric tons are afloat in the worldβs ocean - and that number could nearly triple by 2040 if no action is taken.
π£ Here are a few easy things you can do to reduce your plastic footprint:
1. Reuse shopping bags and bottled water.
2. Support plastic bag bans, polystyrene foam bans, and bottle recycling bills.
3. Seek out alternatives to the plastic items that you rely on.
4. Recycle.
5. Volunteer at a beach cleanup.
