A message from the Florida Wing Commander:

FLWG Members,
In accordance with the memorandum issued by CAP NHQ on 14 March 2020 and the suspension of schools by the Florida Governor, all FLWG unit meetings will be suspended until 11 May 2020.

Cadet Orientation Flights will also be suspended during this time frame.

During this meeting pause, I ask members and units to focus on mission essential tasks and take the pause to complete pending online administrative, online professional development training, and other pending virtual items.

The Wing Command Team will be scheduling a conference call with the Group Commanders and Wing Staff on Tuesday to discuss the impact and way forward.

Additionally, I have asked the FLWG Health Services Officer, Safety, Operations, Communications, and Logistics personnel to develop procedures for cleaning high touch surfaces for our equipment (aircraft, vehicles, radio, etc) and facilities.

Lastly, we will review our scheduled wing level activities that fall within this time frame.

I appreciate your service and diligence during this time. If you or your members have any questions. please forward them through the chain of command.

DESCRIPTION

Cadets who attend FLA will find the instruction to greatly help them when performing leadership roles at their home squadrons and at other CAP activities. Serving on Encampment staff provides a perfect opportunity for cadets to practice the lessons learned from the FLA.

Cadets who intend on applying for Encampment staff are highly encouraged to attend the FLA in order to begin developing their leadership abilities.You will learn the lessons needed to serve at any CAP event and this will weigh heavily when staff are being chosen for the next encampment.

Amateur Radio Plays Key Role In Major FEMA Earthquake Disaster Exercise:

Amateur Radio played a major role in meeting the objectives of the June 6-10 Cascadia Rising 2016 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) exercise in the Pacific Northwest. In the exercise scenario, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and consequent tsunami has struck the Pacific Northwest, causing a blackout of all conventional communication channels -- a natural opening for Amateur Radio to step in. ARES/RACES organizations in Oregon and Washington were heavily involved, and ARRL Headquarters was also in the loop. Upward of 500 Amateur Radio volunteers in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho took part in the exercise. Success of the exercise depended in large part on Amateur Radio point-to-point communication.

"Amateur Radio operators not only provided communications continuity for Emergency Management Agencies, they worked with the Washington State Patrol, Washington State Guard, Washington National Guard, and the Federal Aviation Agency," ARRL Western Washington Section Manager Monte Simpson, AF7PQ, said in his Western Washington Section after-action report, released this week. Simpson is also Washington's State RACES Officer. He said radio amateurs supported approximately 32 city, county, state, tribal, and federal agencies during the event.

MISSION
NASA’s Tracking Data Relay System (TDRS) is a network of specialized satellites that provide communications services to numerous NASA spacecraft. The addition, the TDRS-M satellite will enable space communication between spacecraft and Earth for 15 additional years, replenishing NASA’s Space Network. The satellites enable near-constant communication between Earth and missions like the International Space Station and Hubble Space Telescope. Without the Space Network, scientists, engineers and control room staff would be unable to readily access data from missions such as these.
