Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, commemorates the emancipation of the last enslaved African-Americans in the US. Unfortunately, Jim Crow laws in the southern United States continued to negatively impact the Black community. Virginia Key is historically noted as Miami's "black-only" beach, part of the limited outdoor recreation areas that black families could visit.
HandsOn Miami is hosting a Juneteenth Day of Service at Historic Virginia Key Beach this Saturday, June 22nd starting at 9:30 AM. Volunteers are needed for an environmental restoration project, including removing invasive plants and cleaning up trash from the beach, dunes, and mangroves.
