born in the US with a Cuban heart.

raised in Miami, barely speaking English until the 3rd grade, one of my earliest memories was being chosen to recite Jose Marti's "cultivo una rosa blanca" in school. back then, couldn't tell me i was gringa o americana. CUBAN-american, i made sure to emphasize. ALWAYS. my family fled in the 60s, then 80s, yet i still wonder what el campo they left must've been like. the relationship i have with Cuba is not unlike others - family for years against visiting lest supporting the dictator/communist regime yet having an undying love and connection to the island.

im watching now with pride, fear, and hope my people, my ancestors' people, finally rise up against 60yrs of dictatorship. whatever side of American politics you fall on, there's one thing we should all be united in - wanting a free Cuba.
