Starting a nonprofit organization is similar to planning for a baby. It's not something one can do alone; effective planning involves assembling a supportive community. Think of (your) nonprofit board as your village, much like godparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are to a child. Just as you select godparents based on what your child would need in a loving, supportive environment, you choose board members for their ability to nurture and guide (your) nonprofit.
Some board members may be inherited, while others are intentionally invited to provide support. These intentional relationships are crucial in helping you raise (your ) nonprofit, just as a village raises a child. Board members, like village members, may not be there forever; they may transition to other roles or places. This analogy underscores the importance of intentional, respectful, and trusting relationships in guiding (your) nonprofit on its journey to maturity.
(Your). = The
no one can own an nonprofit. You are the steward over the nonprofit.

As we reflect on the legacy of Shirley Chisholm, it's troubling to see the conflict within the National Congress of Black Women, an organization she co-founded to uplift Black women's voices. The recent legal battle exposes internal conflicts and financial mismanagement that undermines its mission.
Transparency and accountability are crucial in any organization, especially those advocating for marginalized communities. The accusations of financial misconduct and governance challenges underscore the necessity for strong organizational frameworks and strict adherence to established bylaws. Without these safeguards, even the most well-intentioned organizations can stumble.
This is a reminder of the challenges faced by minority-run nonprofits. They often operate with limited resources and face additional scrutiny. It's imperative for all nonprofits, regardless of size or focus, to prioritize good governance practices to ensure their sustainability and effectiveness.
1. Clarity of Roles and Responsibilities
2. Transparency
3. Accountability
4. Risk Management
The is a case study.
Group created by Shirley Chisholm to lift up Black women is roiled by lawsuit A nonprofit founded in 1984 by Shirley Chisholm, the National Congress of Black Women, is enmeshed in a D.C. lawsuit alleging financial misconduct.
"Recognized by the Women's History Coalition, Metris Batts received The Women of Impact Award for her outstanding contributions to the community. This prestigious accolade celebrates women who, like her, have demonstrated exceptional dedication through civic work, volunteerism, business leadership, and philanthropy. Metris Batts expresses sincere gratitude for this honor and remains committed to continuing her positive influence. She extends heartfelt thanks to all who have supported her throughout her endeavors."
