Juneteenth: A Day for Reflection and Unity
Introduction:

Juneteenth, a day marking the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It's a time to reflect on the fight for equality and justice, and to celebrate the resilience and spirit of the African American community.

Human Equality:

Juneteenth reminds us that all people are created equal, regardless of race or origin. As José Martí expressed in his poem "My Race":

"...This word 'racist' is becoming confusing and needs to be clarified. A person doesn't have any special rights because they belong to one race or another: say 'human,' and all rights are already spoken for..."

Suffering and Hope:

Martí also acknowledged the profound suffering caused by slavery, reflected in his poem "Simple Verses":

"I know of a deep sorrow
Among unnamed sorrows:
The enslavement of men
Is the world's greatest grief!"

Celebration and Continued Struggle:

Despite the pain and injustice, Juneteenth is also a day of celebration. It serves as a reminder of the progress made in the fight for equality and a call to continue working towards a more just world for all.

Call to Action:

On this Juneteenth, let us honor the legacy of the fight for freedom and equality. Let us unite to combat racism and discrimination in all its forms. Let us work together to create a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

As we celebrate Father's Day, it's an opportune moment to reflect on the life and legacy of Félix Varela, often revered as the "Father of the Cuban Homeland." His contributions to Cuban identity and independence transcend time and political boundaries, uniting Cubans worldwide in admiration.

Despite spending much of his life outside Cuba, Varela's influence remains deeply rooted in the nation's history, symbolized by his interment in the Aula Magna of the University of Havana. This Father's Day, we pay tribute to a man whose life exemplifies the spirit of fatherhood through dedication, education, and unwavering commitment to justice.

Breadfruit is a wonder: The basketball-size, lime-green, knobbled, dinosaur-egg-like crop can be steamed, roasted, fried, dehydrated, or turned into a sweet custard. It is more calorie- and calcium-dense than a potato, to which its starchy flesh is often compared. A single tree can produce more than 400 pounds of fruit a year with little to no human intervention.

Zoë Schlanger writes about eating tostones made from the fruit in Puerto Rico, where the tree is “everywhere.” If climate change continues to increase temperatures, breadfruit could expand to more of the United States. Read the full article: https://theatln.tc/da3tBxGd

----------------------

A while back, I came across a short video on Instagram where a Dominican designer confidently asserted that the guayabera originated in the Dominican Republic, and that it was even Dominican prócer Máximo Gómez who brought it to Cuba.

While I deeply admire and respect our Dominican brothers, this post is not intended to generate any controversy, but rather to foster a space for shared learning. In that sense, I would like to present you with a book from the year 1895 where two explicit references are made to the guayabera as a garment.

Based on this evidence, a question arises: Is there any historical reference that places the guayabera in the Dominican Republic during that time?

I call on the community of designers and historians so that, if any of them have information or documentation on this matter, they may share it with us. This information will allow us to enrich our knowledge about this iconic garment and better understand its origins and cultural significance.

It is important to remember that history is not always black and white, and that many cultural expressions can have diverse roots. In the case of the guayabera, it is possible that it was influenced by different traditions and that its evolution involved several countries.

Let us open our minds to the possibility of a shared origin, where the guayabera becomes a symbol of unity between our peoples, instead of a cause for discord.
