This World Stroke Day, we’re celebrating HCA Healthcare patient and stroke survivor Manuel Vera. With the help of his care team, Manuel has danced his way through recovery in preparation for an important milestone – dancing with his daughter on her wedding day.
In February, Manuel began experiencing stroke symptoms and was taken to HCA Florida Brandon Hospital, a Comprehensive Stroke Center. At the Brandon, Florida hospital he received life-saving treatment and following his inpatient stroke care, he transitioned to the hospital’s inpatient rehabilitation center to continue recovery.
“We create patient-centered goals upon evaluation, and Manny expressed his goal to be there for his daughter on her wedding day,” shared Heather Burk, a physical therapist at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital. “I love to use dance as balance therapy. So, I asked him if he planned to dance at the wedding. He then proceeded to tell me how dancing merengue and other styles with his daughter was a tradition.”
On his first day of therapy, Manuel’s goals were set and together, he and his physical therapy team began a tailored treatment plan. In August, Manuel had the honor of walking his daughter, Nermais, down the aisle and they shared a special father-daughter dance — the merengue.
Across HCA Healthcare, our stroke and rehabilitation teams support stroke survivors, like Manuel, by providing compassionate, advanced care to get them back to doing what they love. Learn more about how HCA Healthcare aims to prevent, treat and beat strokes: https://bit.ly/3C5ou6G.

🌟 On this Feel Good Friday, we celebrate Jany Gonzalez Nuñez: From Patient to Caregiver 🌟
This year, Jany Gonzalez Nuñez found herself at Mercy, not as a caregiver, but as a patient following a sudden appendicitis. In a twist of fate, her mother was also treated at Mercy just months earlier. The compassion and care they both received left a deep impression on Jany, reigniting her passion for healthcare.
After initially stepping away from her career as a patient care technician, Jany realized that her true calling was to care for others. Now, she’s back—this time on our 7 Carroll unit, providing the same warmth and empathy she once received as a patient.
With a goal to complete her degree in registered nursing, Jany is dedicated to continuing her journey at Mercy. As she beautifully puts it: “Good medical attention may cure, but good care and treatment heals. Sometimes patients just need warmth and empathy to leave the hospital motivated to get better. I experienced this firsthand at Mercy, and I hope to help other patients in the same way.”
Thank you, Jany, for choosing to work at Mercy and for making a difference in the lives of our patients every day! We’re so glad to have you on our team! 💙
Our colleagues have proactively supported their patients, communities and each other throughout Hurricanes Helene and Milton. In the wake of these storms, and with the help of our broader HCA Healthcare network, we've worked to support our colleagues by ensuring they have essential resources such as water, fuel, food and hygiene items so they can continue to care for patients across the Sunshine State. Additionally, 1,041 grants totaling more than $834,100 have been provided to colleagues directly impacted by the storms thanks to the HCA Healthcare Hope Fund, a 501(c)3 public charity.
"Having these resources available for our HCA Florida Healthcare family lets our caregivers know that we are taking care of them and their families, so they can show up and provide outstanding care and emotional support to our patients," said Joe Rudisill, chief executive officer foHCA Florida Englewood in Sarasota County.
As we continue to pick up the pieces following these natural disasters, we are so grateful to every one of our resilient colleagues for their unwavering commitment to the care and improvement of human life.
➡HCA Healthcare established the HCA Healthcare Hope Fund to support colleagues in disasters such as this. The HCA Healthcare Hope Fund is a colleague-run, colleague-supported 501(c)(3) charity that provides financial aid and resources to employees after an extended illness, injury, disaster or other special situation. To date, the Hope Fund has given more than $834,000 in grants to help more than 1,000 HCA Healthcare colleagues in Florida impacted by the recent storms.
During National Pharmacy Week, HCA Florida Mercy Hospital is proud to celebrate the vital contributions of the pharmacists, certified pharmacy technicians and other pharmacy colleagues across our larger HCA Florida Healthcare network.

Across HCA Healthcare, emergency room (ER) nurses care for patients who are facing traumatic or severe, often life-threatening medical emergencies, ranging from car accidents to strokes and heart attacks. Annually, HCA Healthcare hospitals see more than 9 million ER visits. During each of these visits, emergency nurses, like HCA Florida Healthcare’s Rashuan Spencer, are trained to act decisively in critical situations and provide expert skill with compassion.
From a young age, Rashuan felt drawn to pursue a career that was focused on helping others. He has fulfilled that dream by becoming a nurse and for two years, he has been providing patient-centered care in HCA Florida North Florida Hospital’s emergency room. The Gainesville, Florida hospital offers full-service emergency care for adult and pediatric patients. While assessing each patient’s needs when they come into the ER, Rashuan also strives to connect with each patient to bring them ease and comfort.
Prior to becoming an ER nurse, Rashuan joined HCA Healthcare’s Specialty Training Apprenticeship for Registered Nurses (StaRN) program. This year-long graduate residency program is designed to give students a hands-on experience, helping establish valuable clinical and critical thinking skills. “The StarRN program was very beneficial for my start,” Rashuan shared. “This really helped me take what I learned in nursing school and apply it to real life situations.”
Earlier this month, we were proud to celebrate Emergency Nurses Week. Please join us in thanking emergency nurses, like Rashuan, for their dedication to providing lifesaving care each day.
At HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, we are committed to supporting mental health awareness. We are proud to stand with NAMI in their mission to promote mental health education and community awareness. Together, we strive toward a future where mental health challenges no longer hinder individuals from reaching their full potential.
