Sean Fitzpatrick is a certified Medicolegal Death Investigator with over one hundred investigations as a LaPorte County Deputy Coroner. In addition to his service of LaPorte County families Sean works as an autopsy assistant and has assisted with nearly eight hundred autopsies at various hospitals in LaPorte County, Porter County as well as Cook County in Illinois.
The Michigan City Street Department will begin fall leaf pickup Today- Monday, November 13th. 🍁🍁🍁🍁
If residents would like weekly pickups of their leaves, they may use compost/yard waste bags (no plastic bags) available from area merchants (NO TOTERS PLEASE!). Leaves in paper yard bags or 32-gallon trash cans should be placed in the front of property, and will be picked up, by the Refuse Department with regular compost day until the week ending November 17, 2023.
The Street Department request that residents cooperate by following these simple rules:
-No plastic bags are to be used; however, you may use compost yard waste bags or 32- gallon containers.
-Branches, rocks, and other debris must be kept out of the leaf piles.
-Leaf piles should be loose in large piles in front of the property as close to the curb as possible, but away from the sewer drains, utility equipment and fire hydrants.
-Please keep animal waste out of piles.
-NO GARBAGE TOTERS PLEASE!
-Leaves will not be picked up in alleys.
The Street Department will be working on Saturdays in all areas as needed, taking off for Thanksgiving and working the following Friday November 24th.
AREA #1 November 13th thru November 17th / December 4th thru December 8th
Area 1 is marked by Franklin Street on the west, Michigan Boulevard and Roeske Avenue on the east and Kieffer Road on the south.
AREA #2 November 20th, 21st, 22nd, 24th / December 11th thru December 15th
Area 2 is marked by Lake Shore Drive and U.S. 12 and Shoreland Drive on the north, Michigan Boulevard on the south and Meer Road on the east.
AREA #3 November 27th thru December 1st / December 18th thru December 22nd
Area 3 is marked by County Line Road on the west, Franklin Street on the east, Kieffer Road on the south and Lake Michigan on the north.

💥Reminder: MC Fireworks Ordinance💥
As the weather gets warmer and 4th of July gets closer, MCPD receives an overabundance of firework related calls for service. MCPD would like to remind everyone that fireworks can only be discharged by persons 18+ years old and only during set dates and times outlined in city ordinance 54-231. Inside of the corporate limits of Michigan City, fireworks can only be discharged on the following dates and times:
▪️June 29th-July 3rd from 5:00 p.m. until 2 hours after sunset
▪️July 4th from 10:00 a.m. until midnight
▪️July 5th-9th from 5:00 p.m. until 2 hours after sunset
▪️10:00 AM on December 31st until 1:00 AM on January 1st
Anyone discharging fireworks outside of the set dates and times are subject to being cited. The fines for firework related offenses are:
▪️$50-1st Offense
▪️$100-2nd Offense
▪️$250-3rd+ Offenses.
Fireworks are beautiful and a great way to celebrate 4th of July, however; they can also be dangerous and a nuisance to your fellow neighbors and fur-neighbors. Please be kind to your fellow neighbors and strictly abide by the ordinances regulating the use of fireworks. A complete list of city ordinances can be found online by visiting:

Primary Voting is until 6PM TODAY! This is a City Election only. If you live in the city limits of Michigan City, LaPorte, or Kingsford Heights get out and vote! Local elections are determined by a small margin, so your vote carries a lot of weight!
Roadway surface conditions are quickly deteriorating due to the heavy wet falling snow.
Afternoon Shift Deputies are currently working several crash scenes and slide-off incidents, mostly occurring in northern half of the county.
If you must travel this evening, buckle up, eliminate distractions, reduce your speed and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

🥶WINTER STORM WARNING❄️
Michigan City and northern LaPorte County is under a Winter Storm Warning according to the National Weather Service. This warning starts at 3 AM Wednesday (November 16th) and is expected to expire at 9 AM Thursday (November 17th).
The Michigan City area is expected to receive heavy and wet lake effect snow during this time with snow amounts ranging between 5-10 inches. The snow fall is expected to start later this evening. Travel well become very difficult Wednesday morning and continue into Thursday morning.
The Michigan City Street Department is already out and pretreating the roads. Please give our hard working plow drivers some extra space to work so they can keep our roadways clear. Also remember to give yourself some extra travel time, slow your speeds and create some extra space between the vehicle in front of you to help with braking. Don't forget to care for our pets while they are outside.
