As we close out the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, we would be remiss if we did not thank all those who attended the 9/11 memorial ceremony earlier today at Veteran’s Park. Specifically Mayor Florsheim, Councilman Magnifico, Councilman Loffredo, Councilman Nocera, and Councilwoman Blackwell. Thank you for helping us honor the sacrifices made on that fateful day.
Members of Local 1073 Platoon 4 would like to thank Texas Roadhouse of Cromwell for stopping by Headquarters today and dropping off some of their delicious food. We encourage everyone to go support them and thank them for their continued support!

Members of Local 1073 were honored today to meet Paulie, listen to his stories, and es**rt him through Middletown.
Paulie is on his fourth Push, in honor and memory of the heroes of American Flight 11, the first aircraft to be hijacked on September 11, 2001. He departed from Boston’s Public Garden 9/11 Memorial on August 18th pushing his airline beverage cart 210 miles to the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum, Ground Zero.

MFD Drone unit responded last night and into the morning to assist Westfield Fire with a missing person. The male was found early this morning.
Just after 8pm last night, Engine 1, Truck 1, Car 2, Car 3, and Car 4 responded to Dunham Ave in South District for the reported structure fire with people trapped on the second floor. Upon arrival there was heavy fire and thankfully, all human occupants were out of the building due to the help of bystanders. Engine 3 was called to the scene to assist. E1 went through a second floor window off of a ladder and searched the second floor. A large dog was found unconscious and was carried down the ladder where it received medical attention. We are happy to say with medical intervention, the dog regained consciousness. Fire personnel from South District, City of Middletown, Westfield, Portland, and Middlefield along with MPD operated on scene and quickly extinguished the fire. The fire is under investigation by the South District FMO.
Children rescued from Middletown blaze that injured 4, officials say
It is with profound sadness that Middletown Professional Firefighters Local 1073 announces the passing of retired Middletown Fire Department Chief George Dunn. We held comment until this morning to allow his family to grieve his loss in private.
Chief Dunn was a beloved and respected figure in both the Middletown and Connecticut fire service world - working up through the ranks from firefighter to chief, holding every position in between. Such experience allowed him to truly connect with his members on a personnel level. When he spoke to you and offered advice or criticism, you knew he had pedigree to back it up. He was truly a “fireman’s chief”, always measured and fair, but most importantly, always concerned about his people and their well being.
After retirement, he remained active here in Middletown, taking the role of Director of Emergency Management. He also was an adjunct professor with the CFA for years. In short, Chief Dunn loved the fire service and wanted to share that love and knowledge with anyone willing to listen.
We take some solace in having recently had Chief Dunn visit with some of the members, telling stories of the “good old days” and even taking in a few runs with the on duty shift.
And while we mourn his loss, we are forever grateful for the lasting legacy and impression he left on our department and the Connecticut fire service. Forever - gentlemen, a professional, but most importantly a friend. He embodied the mantra, “leave the job better than you found it” and for that, we are eternally grateful.
We ask that you keep Chief Dunn and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Information about services and calling hours will be posted as we receive them.
Rest easy, Chief. And thank you for everything.
Engine 4/Rescue 1 responded Tuesday to this call and assisted the Middletown Animal Control Officer. Thankfully, Wesleyan University students took amazing care of “Wiz” prior to our arrival and our members were successful with freeing Mr. Squirrel. The City should be proud of the truly amazing work that the Middletown Animal Control Officers do on a daily basis.
Your City of Middletown Local 1073 Firefighters have been busy again during these past few hot weeks. Between annual Confined Space and Dive training, our members continue to sharpen their skills to be ready for any and all emergencies, no matter what weather conditions. Dare we say Winter is only 164 days away? 🥶
