Altrusa International of Central Connecticut
Altrusa International of Central Connecticut, Inc. is a volunteer service organization of professionals.
We volunteer our energies to better the communities around us.
Amazing Book Fact Of The Day:
The strangest book, at least in physical appearance, goes to Cent Mille Milliards De Poemes, by French poet Raymond Queneau. At only ten pages long it seems innocuous, but each page is cut in strips, each strip containing a sonnet. All use the same rhyming scheme and therefore all can be combined to create 1,014 separate poems!
Altrusa is sending out Sending out a huge THANK YOU to the community for supporting our efforts to Pack the Pickup with Proteins and Products for the Pantry!!!
This year, we added Xavier students to our volunteer list, and they helped with much of the heavy lifting. Altrusans, ADK, Civitans and Soroptimists were happy to receive your donations of food, funds and recyclable cans to aid Amazing Grace in keeping their shelves stocked at the end of the summer.
In just 4 hours we collected over 1100 pounds of food/products and $1145 in monetary donations. We are still waiting for the figure for donated recyclable cans/bottles; a new addition to this event.
All items and money were driven to immediately after the drive and were gratefully accepted by the manager, Rita.
Over 11 years, we have collected and donated 19,142 pounds of food/product, and over $9000. Thank you for your support of this annual event!!!
Your District One Board and Officers hard at work on Saturday, August 3rd. Face to face, we got a lot accomplished!
On Saturday 8/3.. The Altrusa District One Board of Directors and committee chairs had their summer meeting at the home of governor Rita. it was an energizing meeting as plans were made for the fall workshop to be held at The Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport ME on November 16th. Details will be available in the September issue of the district newsletter. But mark your calendar, save the date and plan to attend. As our Make a Difference Day (MADD) 2022 project, we held a Halloween Pizza Party, on Wednesday, October 26th, at the Hallie House for Women and Children. There were seven mothers and children, along with two staff members. The children were dressed in costumes, so adorable! Some of us had a chance to get down on the floor, play with the kids, and hold them in our arms. What a treat!!
Everyone had a wonderful time at the Pizza Party: Pizza, Salad, Snack bags, Sodas, Water, Halloween Candy, Cupcakes, Cookies, and Ellen’s famous Brownies.
Everything was well received and enjoyed by all. Denetra McBride, the Program Director, told us that our Pizza Party gave their cook a day off, which was an added bonus!!
After dinner we all retired into the playroom, where we distributed gifts. Each mom received a Halloween tote containing: Thermometer and book (from TEMP project committee), 2 children’s books, a rattle, baby Nike shoes (donated), cosmetic bag,
night masks, lotion, deodorant, lip balm, etc. and a Disney fleece throw for each Mom/Child to share. We also brought a SAFFE (Sanitary Access For Females Everywhere) bag for each mom, a basket of books to share, and a basket full of assorted cosmetics so the girls could choose what suited those best. (A big hit!!). They were so grateful for everything they received from Altrusa of Central CT, and could not thank us enough.
How wonderful for us to share some fun and happiness with others!
