It's Mental Health Awareness Week this week and theme is all about moving to improve. Studies show that movement and physical activity helps our mental health by:

+ Improving our mood by triggering chemical changes in the brain
+ Improving sleep
+ Improving self-esteem
+ Reducing anxiety by making our “fight or flight” response less reactive
+ Encourages us to set and achieve goals
+ Meeting new people and spending time with others
+ Slowing cognitive decline

New RCOT Workforce Strategy calls for more OTs in the community More occupational therapists placed in community settings, rather than hospitals, will prevent people from developing health crises, help them get support for existing health needs sooner, and reduce pressure on A&E and GP services. Community settings include GP practices, schools, social services,....

Therapeutic companions on the journey to well-being HEAL- OT

Earlier today our Patron, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, visited Plumptre Hall in Eastwood. Her Royal Highness heard about invaluable new services delivered by mental health occupational therapists. 💚

The Princess was hosted by our Chair of Council, Odeth Richardson, and Steve Ford, our Chief Executive, alongside Nottingham West Primary Care Network and local NHS provider Primary Integrated Community Services Ltd.

'Mental health problems are becoming more and more prevalent every year, particularly since the Covid pandemic. Services like this are essential for providing the support communities need to help prevent crises developing.

'Occupational therapists provide diverse expertise to primary care teams, helping patients get fast access to the right care. But very few GP practices have occupational therapists, and that needs to change fast. That’s why we want to see more occupational therapists in GP practices and other community settings. Just like we’ve seen today in Nottinghamshire. Only then can we start to focus on prevention and early intervention.'
