Reminder that our Veterans Appreciation Day is today! This free event will be held from 10am-2pm, with the ceremony beginning at 11am.

We are incredibly honored to welcome guest speaker Brigadier General Stanley F. Cherrie, a Millville high school grad who served for 34 years in the U.S. Army. Brig. Gen. Cherrie has received countless decorations and awards, among them the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with V Device. We will also be recognizing Sam Donovan, the artist who painted many of the spectacular murals around our Museum.

We are very excited to have World War II veterans in attendance, including Tim Kiniry, 102-year-old medic in the Battle of the Bulge, and Sandy Wentzell, 101-year-old radio operator who completed 30 combat missions in a B-17.

A mess hall lunch will be provided by Verna’s Flight Line after the ceremony.

All veterans are welcome!

Artist Diane Rogers completes six WWII-style posters promoting the Millville Army Air Field National Museum

Artist Diane Rogers, executive director of the Millville Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts, recently completed six unique posters promoting the important World War II history of the Millville Army Air Field, America’s First Defense Airport.

The project, formally entitled WWII Posters – Building Connections to Millville Army Air Field History through Art, promotes the Air Field’s history to the public through visual art.
The six art posters were created in graphite and color pencil by Rogers in the eye-catching style of WWII posters, but representing various themes associated with the Millville Army Air Field.

The Museum collaborated with Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts, a local partner in Cumberland County, to exhibit the posters. After a public opening at the Center on September 20, the posters will be on display through the end of October.

Funding for the poster project was made possible in part by the New Jersey Historical Commission/ Department of State and the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners through the Cumberland County Cultural and Heritage Commission.

It was an honor hosting crew members of the USS New Jersey last year.

The Navy commissioned the newest Virginia-class fast-attack submarine, the future USS New Jersey (SSN 796), during an 11 a.m. EST ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Naval Weapons Station Earle in Middletown Township, New Jersey.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy will deliver the principal address. Additional speakers include Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro; Adm. William Houston, director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program; the Honorable Frank Pallone and Donald Norcross, U.S. Representatives from New Jersey; Jennifer Boykin, president, HII-Newport News Shipbuilding; and Larry Runkle, vice president, Virginia-Class Submarine Program, General Dynamics Electric Boat.

The future USS New Jersey (SSN 796) is the third naval vessel named for the state. The first USS New Jersey was a battleship commissioned in 1906 as part of the Great White Fleet that expanded the Navy during World War I. The second, also a battleship, commissioned in 1943 and earned commendations for action in World War II and the Korea and Vietnam conflicts.
New Jersey is the fifth Block IV Virginia-class submarine and is the first in its class designed and built with modifications for a gender-integrated crew. Former Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced the name of this nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine at a ceremony on May 24, 2015. Its keel was authenticated on March 25, 2019, and it was christened at Newport News Shipbuilding on Nov. 13, 2021. The shipbuilder delivered New Jersey on April 25 of this year.

Each Virginia-class submarine is 7,800-tons and 377 feet in length, has a beam of 34 feet, and can operate at more than 25 knots submerged. It is designed with a reactor plant that will not require refueling during the planned life of the ship, reducing lifecycle costs while increasing underway time. The submarine was built under a unique teaming agreement between General Dynamics Electric Boat and HII-Newport News Shipbuilding wherein both companies build certain portions of each submarine and then alternate deliveries.

God Speed and safe protection for the entire crew!

Join us tonight for Movie Night with guest speaker Ed Cox, Sr., a U.S. Navy veteran and longtime Museum volunteer!

Ed served during the Vietnam War as an E-4 Petty Officer 3rd Class and Machinists Mate. He was assigned to the Lockheed P-2 Neptune, a maritime patrol and anti-submarine aircraft. In 1968, his squadron located four North Vietnamese trawlers loaded with enemy armaments and as a result, three were destroyed before they could be used against the United States and South Vietnamese.

The movie tonight will be The American Navy in Vietnam, part of the Vietnam: America’s Conflict documentary series.
