Man, I wish someone would have educated me sooner about medical-grade skincare! ​​​​​​​​

Up until my 30's I struggled hard with acne. I saw multiple dermatologists, and tried countless different skincare products and regimens only to always be left wondering, "Is this the best it can get for me?”​​​​​​​​

I'd look in the mirror 🪞 and always feel awkward and uncomfortable with my skin and how I looked without makeup. There was a point in my life I wouldn't even go to the gym without putting some kind of makeup on because I was so embarrassed. ​​​​​​​​

After joining The Skin Clique, I finally got the education and explanation on how to truly care for my skin. I took the leap and invested in quality products. Many of my patients are first-timers to tox. A common question I get is, so how does it work? 🤨

Well, the simplest answer is that Botulinum Toxin irreversibly binds to a specific receptor on the muscle. This blocks certain chemical signals from nerves, mostly signals that cause muscles to contract. The most common use of these injections is to temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. This is true whether you get Botox, Xeomin, or Dysport. 💉

The next question I get is, is it safe? 🧐

Yes! it is. At this point, we have numerous studies that make up 30 years worth of safety data. The most common side effects are redness, pain at the injection site, and bruising. All of these are temporary. Notably, there have been no 🚫documented cases of anaphylaxis from the use of Botulinum toxin.

Happy Monday!!

I know I have a lot of new faces around here since my last introduction post, so I thought this would be a good time to reintroduce myself. 👋🏻

🔸I’ve worked as a Physician Assistant for 5.5 years. 4 years in the Emergency Department & the last 1.5 years in Hematology/Oncology

🔸I joined The Skin Clique in 6/2022. I’ve always been interested in Dermatology and Aesthetics so I’m grateful for the opportunity given to me. Through this, I’ve gotten to meet a lot of cool people and make some amazing community partnerships.

🔸I’ve been married to best friend for 9 years & we have 2 dogs, Mia & Oliver. My husband owns his own studio gym in Milwaukee. Mia & Oliver love going to work and greeting all the members!

“My Botox doesn’t last?” I hear this often from new patients so let’s talk about Botox, doses, and expected duration.

Did you know the studied dose for Botox in the upper face is 64 units? Did you know the average US patient is receiving half this dose at just 32 units?!? 🤯

Botox is the only product on the market that has conducted clinical studies in all 3 areas of treatment of the upper face. The areas and doses are:
1. Glabella/ 11 lines: 20 units
2. Forehead: 20 units
3. Crows feet/ smile lines: 24 units

This “therapeutic dose” of 64 units of Botox is shown to provide you with 12 weeks (3 months) of duration. However, that doesn’t mean day 1 it works and week 12 it stops. Remember it is a gradual process:
✨It takes 2 weeks for full affects
✨Your best results are weeks 2-8
✨Week 9-10 movement slowly returns
✨Week 12 you are back to baseline
✨You are now ready to treat again

What happens when you reduce that 64 unit dose by half and give your patient a dose of 32 units? Simple: you reduce the duration. Your treatment will not last up to 12 weeks, rather 6 weeks because half the dose equals half the time. This is perfectly normal and is directly correlated to the smaller dose your received. There is no resistance or immunity issues developing. With 32 units you will experience a gradual process:
✨It still takes 2 weeks for full affect
✨Your best results are weeks 2-4
✨Week 5 movement slowly returns
✨Week 6 you are back at baseline
✨You are ready to treat again.

Sometimes when your provider hears your goals and assess your anatomy we make adjustments to your dose. Most commonly in the forehead where patients request to keep some muscle movement. When the dose in the forehead is reduced so is the duration. You will find that the 11 lines and crows feet that were fully treated will last longer then your reduced forehead treatment. Again, there is no immunity happening! You are responding as expected to the dose given in each area.

If you follow the scales I added, consider your dose compared to the duration you see.

And please remember Botox wears off slowly not suddenly!
