Worried about what a heat pump may cost to run?

I replaced my entire furnace with a heat pump in an effort to make my home comfortable. They simply didn't make a furnace small enough to do the job. Now that I've got an appropriately sized HVAC system my home is more comfortable then ever, no more drafts, no more chilly bedrooms, no more cold furniture or floors.

It seems there's a lot of concern when you talk about the cost of "electric sourced heat", which is understandable. Most of us have gas furnaces and we've always known it to be cheap and reliable.

The photo I posted is my March 2024 energy use in dollars for the entire home.

My electric usage for the whole home came in at $179, where the heat pump and air handler consumed $145 of it, plus about 6 bucks for my water heater.

Heat pumps don't have to replace your entire furnace however, they also can pair with your furnace and give you an additional heat source Incase your furnace goes down.

If your house is chilly, your second floor or any room doesn't heat properly, or your looking to set yourself up for an energy market that's transitioning heavily to renewables, heat pumps are very versatile options that often offer solutions to these problems.

If you currently deal with or have any of these concerns, feel free to reach out and let's have a conversation!

Is it possible replace my furnace with a heat pump? SHOULD I replace my furnace with a heat pump?

The short answer? Yes you can. However they also can pair great with a furnace depending on your application.

We find many homes have much smaller ductwork than they should for the current size furnace they have. This issue becomes MUCH more important when replacing your furnace with today's more sensitive equipment.

Heat pumps generally require less ductwork (depending on your home's needs) than your furnace does, which solves alot of ductwork problems and helps ensure your new HVAC investment will live a long and happy life!

(See the video linked below regarding your HVAC systems blood pressure)

Heat pumps are also great for solving a lot of common comfort problems many homes face, such as:

Rooms that are too hot or too cold

An overall "drafty" feeling of the home

Uneven temperatures throughout the house

They also give you an additonal source of heat incase the furnace stops working!

Now you may be wondering, does a heat pump make sense for my house?

If your dealing with any of the challenges listed above then more-than-likely the answer is yes.

If youd like to learn more or would like to have a conversation with me about it, and ESPECIALLY before you replace your AC please feel free to shoot me a text message, give me a call, or click the link below to fill out the Comfort Quiz to get in touch

Cant wait to find out why your second floor doesnt heat or cool properly?

By popular vote im working on making a video for you guys that shows why you and most other two story homes that have comfort problems on the second floor have them in the first place, and what goes in to making them comfortable living spaces once again!

Heres a small little snippet from my recordings so far with my Blower Door. This is a tool energy auditors use when trying to find problem areas in your home where you may be losing energy, or for our purposes, losing comfort!

A blower door test is not always needed to solve your comfort problems on the second floor, most of the time we find that good educated decisions for your new HVAC system will often times do the trick, however the blower door increases your chances of success. Part of my process when helping my clients pick their new HVAC system is to offer them the tools they need to make good purchasing decisions that line up with their budget, health and comfort goals, and long term plans with an ever-changing energy market.

If you deal with rooms that are too hot or too cold, chronic sinus and allergy problems, moisture problems (including ice dams) and your curious about what might be able to be done about it or what the next steps may look like, feel free to shoot me a text, give me a call and id love to chat about it. Or even fill out the comfort quiz if its something your urgently looking to tackle!

Happy Saturday everyone!

In preparation for my videos on what makes your home comfortable, safe, and healthy, I wanted to give you guys a free tip if your currently or soon-to-be in the market for a new HVAC system.

I would develop a list of comfort concerns you may have, ask yourself things such as:

1. Are there any rooms or entire stories in my home that dont heat or cool properly?

2. Does the noise level or even "tin can" popping noise of the current system bother me? Do I find myself turning up the TV everytime it comes on?

3. Do I feel "drafts" coming from the windows? (Would you be surprised to find out it isnt always because the window is leaking?)

4. Who in my home suffers from seasonal allergies or other respiratory challenges? Is there an excessive amount of dust in my home?

When picking a contractor to perform this work for you be sure to pay attention and see if THEY are asking you these questions as well! If they arent, then in my experience it is VERY difficult to solve your problems if they dont take these steps to discover your concerns. After all this sales visit should be about whats important to you and your family right?

A new HVAC system is a 15-20 year commitment, and if they arent making effort to discover these things that could very possibly be solved with new equipment, then you may find yourself disappointed with your new purchase and the only way to fix it most likely would be to replace it AGAIN!

If anyone has any questions on how to choose a contractor so that this doesnt happen to you, or are curious on how the RIGHT system may be able to fix these problems feel free to shoot me a text, email, or give me a call!

If your looking for guidance on what kind of system may address your concerns I can also help you develop a solution.

Do you suffer from seasonal allergies?

These photos are from a furnace installation I did yesterday. They show a very large return duct with the filter placed about halfway down the actual duct.

The large duct slows down the air speed going across the filter and GREATLY reduces duct pressure.

This was installed in this manner due to my clients goals of reducing their seasonal allergies, without this setup putting in a high performance Merv13 filter would actually have done more harm than good!

The system runs much quieter, the duct pressure is much lower than it previously was, and the filter will work 10x better because of the slow air speed!

Good evening!

In this video I'm completely getting rid of my gas furnace and traditional AC and replacing it with a ducted heat pump with a small 6 killowatt backup heat strips.

The decision to do this was fueled primarily by comfort problems in my home.

The home always felt drafty in the winter time, it was awful getting out of bed to touch the cold floors, or to sit down after a long day on the ice cold couch with what felt like drafty windows blowing at the back of my neck, while the rest of the home felt as if it had a tiny breeze moving through it all of the time.

Through some research, testing of my house with a blower door, and some calculations it turns out my heating load is so small that they dont make a furnace small enough for my home to keep it comfortable.

After installing the heat pump the house now feels as if its heated by radiators as the heat pump constantly trickles just enough heat to keep the thermostat at setpoint around the clock.

My windows no longer feel drafty

My floors and furniture are now warm to the touch.

I made some other changes to my ductwork, fresh air intakes, and filtration setup to reach some other comfort, noise and health goals that I had. Ill go over some of these things in detail in another video.

Let me know if you guys would like to see a video showing some behind-the-scenes about what went in to the decision to get rid of my gas furnace and how it fixed my uncomfortable house!

(I know the scenes are a bit spotty and seem to be missing some content, it was a late night on this install and I didnt capture everything I wanted too)

Good evening neighbors! I hope everyone is staying warm.

With the abnormally low temperatures mixed with the large snowfall I wanted to give you guys some things to check if you find yourself without heat.

Commonly we will see furnaces not running because the intake and/or the exhaust pipes are blocked up with snow and ice.

If you have a high efficient furnace Be sure to check the plastic pipes outside your home and ensure they are clear of the snow and arent blocked up.

If you have a heat pump (such as the one in the pictures) make sure that the bottom of the heat pump is atleast 8-12 inches above the snow line to prevent any condensate from freezing in the unit itself. This will reduce the performance of the heat pump and can cause high energy bills and the temperature in your home falling behind a bit.

Check your furnace filters, if the filters are plugged up this will cause the furnace to overheat and can reduce heating performance, in extreme cases it can prevent your furnace from working at all.

Make sure that your gas meters outside of your home are free of ice and snow, we have seen them freeze up and become inoperable.

I hope everyone stays warm and safe, if you dont have heat and no one can get out to you relatively soon lots of local police departments, fire departments and community centers will let you stay so you and your family can remain warm and safe!

This is a 1990's Two story colonial-type home with a vaulted ceiling on the first floor. The client had initially called us for large amounts of dust in the home causing her a handful of respiratory problems. During the visit she had also mentioned ice dams in the gutters being a chronic problem as she was about to be on her 4th time of gutter replacement. It was also mentioned that the second floor never heated or cooled correctly.

Currently they have a 100kbtuh furnace (90kbtuh output) and a 3.5 ton AC. (42kbtuh) Using the client's energy bill paired with the blower door number in CMF50 our load calculations came in at about 27kbtuh heat loss and 17kbtuh heat gain, meaning this house can be heated and cooled year round with a 2 Ton Heat Pump. The oversized equipment will short-cycle, meaning it wont run very often and when it does it isn't for long. This can and will create comfort problems in individual rooms or sometimes entire floors!

We also found a return duct laying in the attic insulation that wasn't hooked up properly, dragging fiberglass from the attic down into the duct system and into the home.

Using our blower door and infared camera we were also able to find tons of air leakage points in basement joists, attic hatches, and plumbing chases. All of these things contribute to stack effect and result in energy losses as well as bringing air into your home from some less-than-desireable places.

The blower door number wasnt super high, it was a 2300sq ft home and generally you can control comfort with your HVAC equipment alone if the leakage to square footage ratio is 1:1 or lower. The ice damming root cause was determined to be air leakage from inside of the home to the attic. This will cause the warm air to hit your roof deck, melting the snow on your roof and allowing it to flow just enough to freeze back up in your gutters.
