UWM's Thomas A. Greene Geological Collection is among the first 11 Geoheritage Collections in the world ratified by the International Commission on Geoheritage. The only US collection on the list, the Greene Collection was ratified as “a museum collection … of global importance because of its particularly high scientific, historical and/or educational relevance for geological sciences.” This certification was made possible in part due to the tireless efforts of UWM Geosci alum Dr. Donald Mikulic and current Academic Program manager Rob Graziano. Thanks to Don, Rob, and all the fantastic student workers, volunteers, and researchers who bring this irreplaceable collection to life and share it with the public.

Congratulations to UWM PhD student Nancy Carman on her new publication on hydrothermal chimney analogs. Check it out!
Fe/Mg-Silicate Chemical Gardens as Analogs to Silicate-Rich Hydrothermal Chimneys on Early Earth and Mars Hydrothermal systems have been proposed as environments for prebiotic chemistry on early Earth. Ancient Mars had surface water and could also have had hydrothermal vents supporting biological or prebiotic processes. The Strýtan hydrothermal field (SHF) in Iceland is a basalt-hosted alkaline vent th...

To commemorate the end of our academic year, we recently held our annual Student Recognition Banquet where we celebrated the achievements made by our faculty, staff, and most importantly our students. We'd like to say congratulations to all of our students for an amazing school year, and we look forward to seeing you all again in the Fall!
Pictured here are some of our outstanding undergraduate and graduate students who went above and beyond this year, and received various awards and scholarships for their efforts. Great job everyone!
Professor Dyanna Czeck and her students are back in Spain with her colleague Manuel Díaz-Azpiroz. They're continuing their studies of deformation in the Pulo do Lobo formation caused by the Southern Iberian Shear Zone.
Geosci PhD student Rakiba Sultana was awarded the NSF’s Non-Academic Research Internships for Graduate Students (INTERN) to conduct numerical modeling of groundwater flow and contaminant transport under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Fienen at the USGS’s Upper Midwest Water Science Center in Madison, WI. Rakiba’s modeling efforts will be aimed at simulating uranium transport from the vadose zone to groundwater during flooding events. Congrats, Rakiba!
As the Spring 2024 semester comes to an end, we are also celebrating the retirement of Professor Mark Harris, a specialist in carbonate sedimentology/stratigraphy as well as the history of geology. Though Mark has served in our department for many years, he has also held many prominent positions on campus, including serving as the Acting Dean at the School of Freshwater Sciences (2009-2011), Interim Chancellor’s Designee for Strategic Planning (2014-2015), and the Vice Provost for Research (2015-2022). Mark began his first year at UWM in 1990 as an Associate Professor in our department, and he's been serving UWM for a total of 33 years. We'd like to say a BIG thank you to Mark for all he's done for our students, our department, and our University, and we hope that you enjoy your much deserved retirement!
