-Keep alcohol and table scraps away from your pet
-Never leave your pet unsupervised around bodies of water
-Keep your pet hydrated
-Limit time in the sun and heat
-Keep your pet away from fireworks
-Make sure your pet has an ID tag or is microchipped

What a great start to our Friday! 😍
Is your pet scooting or licking their rear? It could be their a**l glands.
A**l glands are located on the rear of dogs and cats. The glands produce an oily, fishy-smelling fluid that helps with scent marking. Sometimes these glands can get impacted or infected.
Soft, consistent stool, as well as allergies, are common causes of irritation. If your pet is scooting, licking excessively, or showing signs of discomfort around their rear end, contact us! We will help to identify the cause and determine the best course of treatment.
Dogs and Cats of Antiqua Sanctuary Story
A HUGE shout out to a wonderful client of ours – Mary Beth and Donavan. They have been volunteering at a sanctuary in Antiqua (Dogs and Cats of Antiqua) for the past year and half. They have been going to Antigua for the past 10 years, and wanted to be good “citizens” and contribute to society there. As huge animal advocates, they felt this was the perfect opportunity for them.
They work at the sanctuary to help clean, build, and organize. They walk dogs and give LOTS of socialization and love.
Mary Beth is now on their capital campaign committee to help fundraise for the construction of a hurricane proof structure for the residents. She is also working with the American University of Antigua to build an ongoing volunteer program with students there. Some are also able to foster. She is working on finding and writing for grants to help the sanctuary work with schools in Antigua to help educate children on respect and compassion toward animals. The hope is to change the dynamic there and end the abuse.
Currently, they are working hard to get meetings with the government to help elevate their pleas for help to enforce current laws and create new stronger ones.
DACOA has been able to send cats and dogs to far reaching areas, including Canada, Switzerland, UK, and the US in numerous different states.
Mary Beth says “Wisconsin is new, and the people here have been incredible. I have been working with Our Pack Animal Rescue in New London WI. They are an amazing group. I’m always looking for additional foster groups and trying to find one for the Chicago area.”
Small Animal Hospital has been donating food and supplies to the cause in Antiqua. Mary Beth and her husband Donavan take several large duffle bags of supplies and food every time they go down there. Then they bring puppies back with them to find them homes.
We want to thank Mary Beth and Donavan for all of their dedication helping the dogs and cats in Antigua. They are truly amazing people and we are here to support them!

With tomorrow being Hairball Awareness Day, we wanted to remind our cat parents about the importance of preventing hairballs.
Accumulated from excessive grooming, hairballs can build in your cat’s digestive system and either get coughed up or in some cases, need surgical removal.
If your cat is excessively vomiting, lethargic, loses their appetite, or has diarrhea or constipation, these may be signs of a blockage and you should contact our team immediately.
