James May Gallery
Contemporary Gallery Started by Kendra Bulgrin and Jimmy Eddings in Algoma, Wisconsin in 2015 with the goal of presenting contemporary works of art and craft.
The gallery is named after their two young sons, Everett James and Forrest May. The artist-run gallery specializes in showing regional and national artists and craftspeople both emerging and established. It is our hope to help first-time art buyers, as well as collectors, expand or start their art collection in a friendly, knowledgeable atmosphere. We also offer free on-site art consulting. We have now moved to the greater Milwaukee area!
A few details from our latest exhibition featuring: Daniel Clauson, Ida Floreak, and Matteo Neivert.
The gallery is open today (Saturday) until 5:30!

Clare Doveton studied painting at Parsons School of Art and Design in New York City, where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1998. After years living in congested urban environments, Doveton moved back to her home of Kansas in 2005. Her paintings are rooted in a deep connection to the land there, and the magic of being solitary and present in nature. Clare has taken pollinator conservation courses through Xerces Society and NRCS, and received Permaculture Design Certification through Kansas Permaculture Collaborative in 2010. She has worked with pollinator ecologists documenting monarch activity on Native Tall Thistle, which often show up in her work along with other plant guides. Meditation practice is central to her work and life, as are solitary retreats out onto the prairie with her dog Suki. Doveton’s work can be found in public and private collections worldwide including KU Medical Center, New School University, Truman Medical Center, and Kansas University.
Come and see the latest exhibition: Reverence + Ritual + Renewal featuring: Daniel Clauson, Matteo Neivert, & Ida Floreak on view until Aug 26th.

Megan Magill
Swimming With the Fishes, 2022
Oil on Panel
36 × 48 in
Part of our booth at Summer Foundations Artsy Fair.
Megan Magill creates work that questions the stories we tell ourselves in light of life’s ultimate uncertainty. Her studio practice embraces drawing, printmaking, and photography as stepping stones and conspirators to her whimsical paintings. Through a process that involves found imagery, improvised methods and a reliance on chance her work pays homage to all that is strange and wonderful in our lives. Magill has shown throughout the US and makes her work in Brooksville, Maine.
Absolutely in love with these sculptures!
Come view them today from 10:30-5:30 or check them out on Artsy.

These ceramic forms are reflective of the Abject Body - the traumatized body - the Q***r body. They act as monuments of resistance towards the limitations of biopolitical structures in order to create spaces of acceptance. Utilizing amorphous qualities, these artworks relinquish figurative notions of the academically rendered, colonially enforced, and socially/politically elected ideas of Body. Challenging social political binary ideals and histories of the heteronormative Body to evaluate how we simultaneously hold identity, trauma, and desire. —Clauson

In much of my work I incorporate a lifelong habit of collecting and gathering. I still hold as precious, the spider that crawled into my grade school book and sadly got flattened between the pages. It is a relic of long-ago and reminds me of how vulnerable we all are. I continue to hold and cherish items I find around me. I navigate through my days often noticing something, picking it up, studying it, and perhaps it will land in my pocket, my studio, in a painting, a vessel, placed on an altar, or photographed along side me in a portrait. These finds keep me company, become part of my home and studio, they invite me into new spaces.
I live and work in rural Michigan. Everyday I walk in the woods and experience this environment melt into me. I watch everything continually changing, every season, every moment, and come to feel and experience myself as an integral part of it all. —Pappas
Ida Floreak
Conference, 2021
Oil on wood
8 × 10 in
Available
Part of our latest exhibition: REVERENCE + RITUAL + RENEWAL
Ida Floreak is a painter living in New Orleans, LA. Her work deals with ecological anxieties paired with reverence for the natural world. She explores what it means to be human in a time of ecological disaster, where to find hope and our place in the recovery, as well as the universal human trait of worship. Humanity is an ancient and vital part of the planets ecology - our belief systems and rituals are an integral facet of nature. Drawing from a classical tradition with influences in the Italian Renaissance and medieval reliquaries, she examines the importance of acknowledging a world and systems greater than oneself, and finding the sacred in the smallest artifacts of nature.

My artwork explores the powerful forces of nature and biology in real and imaginary compositions. A consistent thread in my work is the idea of change and evolution. Nature exists as an ultimate force. These forces can be subtle or overt and exist as both scientific and phenomenological in my work. I attempt to capture the magic of these forces and the relationship of the human condition to these ever changing environments. Many of my subjects are often meant as historical symbols of the eroding relationship between humans and nature.
Fragility and strength act as common themes. Interest in the scientific realms such as evolution, tides, gravity, growth, formation, replication, microbiology, physics, astronomy, and climatology converges in my work with plants, animals, and landscapes. I approach imagery and composition with a keen awareness of historical precedent. Recently my artwork has become more figurative and realistic to emphasize the narrative, theatrical, and beautiful aspects of simple objects and things such as ice, water, rocks, eggs, and shells. I am inspired by the boundless fodder that the earth, the universe, and the microscopic offer as imagery. —Neivert

Value, color, mark making, lighting, texture, and careful compositions merge with my materials. In my drawings I show the charcoal and pencil as a material, and the pentimento, erasures, smudges, and lines are just as integral as the image itself. In my paintings I often use visible brushwork, drips, splatters, texture, impasto, and glazes to enrich the surface. In my ceramic work I use glazes that imitate a surface that looks as if the sculpture was buried or had a crackled painted surface. To achieve this finish I mix various textured glazes and use multiple kiln firings. There is a constant dialogue between my paintings, drawings, and sculptures of ideas, subject matter, and surfaces.
The gallery is open today from 10:30-5:30!
We hope to see you! We will also be open next week during the RNC. Stay tuned for any change in our hours (I’m keeping an open-mind/open-heart and will see how it all goes).

The movement of these forms evoke touch and intimacy while also possessing sections of fragmentation, loss, and rough textural erosion. An essence of distorted familiarity exists through the physically opened and hollowed forms. A repeating visual language flows through the work created by the layering of clay slabs that fold together torsos and extremities. Ambiguous beginnings and endings dissolve and appear through the thickly applied glazed and mixed media surfaces. The textured surface reveals landscapes reminiscent of those within my childhood in the Pacific Northwest. Using memories of caves carved from the oceans salt water and the rough terrain of the Cascade mountains, these ceramic forms reveal effects of continual wear that is similarly received by erosions within the landscape and traumas upon the human Body. —Clauson
