Spicy foods aren't for everyone, including the critters that seem to empty your bird feeders. In fact, people, rodents and other mammals feel the burn when eating peppers. Birds do not.
That's a great tidbit of information to know when creating foods that can satisfy birds but deter animals, such as squirrels and raccoons.

🍂 Fall migration is underway and billions of birds are migrating through North America, mostly under the cover of darkness. 🌙✨ Unfortunately, they face an increasing threat: unnatural, man-made light that attracts, disorients, and makes birds vulnerable to collisions with buildings. 🏙️💡
The solution is as simple as flipping the switch. 🔄 Turning off lights dramatically reduces hazards and allows birds to safely proceed with their migratory journeys. For more tips, visit: https://www.wbu.com/lights-out/

This morning….please forgive photo quality. This beautiful pair of great horned owls has managed to avoid consuming any poisoned critters. I hope to see them mate this coming December.
Please, please, please don’t poison the mice, chipmunks, voles. It takes only one poisoned small mouse to kill these beauties. Hopefully poison is never an option. Poisoned critters will also kill outdoor cats, fox, etc.

We’re heartbroken to share that after 8 days of intensive care and a few promising glimmers of hope, our Bald Eagle patient passed away on Saturday morning. 💔 (You can read his full story here: https://wihumane.me/BaldEagle2024) We did everything we could – and *he* gave everything he could – but in the end, the poison had done too much internal damage and he passed away quietly in his enclosure. We urge you to please keep his story in mind whenever you hear of someone considering poison as a form of pest control. We know unwanted visitors can be frustrating, but our team is well-versed in advising humane, effective solutions that won’t cause undo suffering or harm to the culprits, nor the many other species who may feed on them after they perish.
We take every loss to heart, but this one is especially painful for the team members who watched him inch closer to recovery against all odds; we knew it was a long shot, but we rooted for him at every turn. We take solace in knowing he was not left to suffer alone for days on end, but instead passed away in relative comfort, cared for by people who’ve dedicated their lives to protecting wildlife.
To the countless supporters who have been in his corner since his arrival, we can’t thank you enough. Your words of encouragement and uplifting messages mean so much to us, and the dollars donated toward this work ensure we’re able to be there for the dozens of wild animals who have already arrived since his passing. We are eternally grateful to serve such a compassionate community – thank you. ❤️🩹

Many kids today don't seem to know how great the outdoors is. It's like they've chosen to "go screen" instead of "going green." Gracie! Look close! you can see a beak filled with pollen. So this is Gracie. She's sat on this very chair for seven seasons. Ive documented her every season. She's always flown slower, she's chubbier than all the others, but she's healthy and happy. I never thought that first year in 2017 that I met her, with the slow flight that she could make the 2,500 mile migration, she has! Every Spring I wondered if Id ever see her again. Her slow flight, her chubby body, and then to be blessed now with 7 seasons with her! There is not one other hummingbird like this, not one. But it shows me how tough and resilient nature can be, and how in my own imperfections I can learn from her. I hope you follow along as I continue to share her story.
Water! Birds love it especially now in the heat. This Waterfall Rock keeps the water circulating and can be dropped into any birdbath. It’s so fun watching the birds enjoy! (An electrical outdoor extension cord would be needed.)
So this is Gracie, the hummingbird I shared with you all in a previous video. She’s always sitting with me when I’m outside. Always visiting. She doesn’t land on me but always near me. She flies as slow as a snail, she looks like a broad tailed, but is bigger. She’s not as graceful as most because she’s so chubby, she sits on the branches of the flowers, and sometimes falls right off. There are many previous photos of her pictured here over the years. I have documented her for the last seven years. She doesn’t chirp or buzz like a broad tailed. And I have no idea how she migrates all that way because her flight is slower than the normal hummingbird. I could compare it to a slower flying sphinx moth. it will be a few hours and she will be back visiting me again today. I have over 50 flower baskets and five hummingbird feeders for her. I hope to keep sharing her story here. And her story will be available in a book at the store in September
