Look at this precious, perfect, peaceful face. Baby Benny is turning around, he has gained almost two pounds, his eyes are clear, and his energy is so much better. He still loves to be snuggled and feel safe. Benny is a dairy goat breed and just like dairy calves, he was taken from his mama within hours after birth. On dairy farms (large and small) female goats and cows are impregnated (cows generally by human artificial insemination and goats either by allowing a buck to mate with the female or by AI), they carry their babies and love them, but soon after they are born, the babies are taken from the mothers so humans can take the mother’s milk. Mothers and babies cry for days for each other. This happens over and over again, until the mother no longer produces enough milk to be profitable and then she is usually sent to slaughter. The female babies will be raised to be the next generation of milk producers and the males who are a byproduct are usually raised for meat, some for veal which is a horrific process, and others discarded or killed immediately at birth just for being born a boy. If you have experienced the love of a child, you can imagine the heartbreak and emotional trauma these mothers go through over and over again when their newborn child is taken from them and the fear and sadness the baby experiences without a mother to love and nurture them. They are no different from humans in their capacity to love and feel. Benny cries when he can’t see us and climbs into our laps to be held and loved. Benny is the face of dairy. Goat’s milk or cow’s milk was intended for baby goats and cows, not for humans. We have no need to consume another animal’s milk, in fact we are the only species who does and past early childhood. With so many plant-based alternatives available now it has never been easier to !
