A few days before my birthday, I received an email from NamUs, referencing their observance of May 25th as National Missing Children's Day.

That one hit hard, because one, it's my birthday, and two, I consider myself a "missing child" though I only really thought about that upon reading the email.

I wanted to post about this previously, but it was too "raw." I'll try to do so delicately here.

The NamUs email speaks of "vulnerabilities" missing children face and also how they focus on the "journey" to bring missing children "home." I totally agree with that and I work every day to identify as many as I can.

While I focus my work on "real" missing children, such a those that are in my Unknown Humans Remains cases, or those that might be Missing and Murdered, I too feel, like so many other NPE's, I'm a missing child.

Not knowing who I was, I missed out on a "real" dad. I missed out on sisters and my "real" family. This late in life, you can't get those years back. It's lonely. It's "a lot."

I missed out on Father's Day, coming up soon, Daddy/Daughter dances, and the most important part, learning what a good man is, what a safe family life is all about. Men that are present in your kids' lives, I commend you.

Even as an experienced adult, I'm writing this to you, as the child. For those of us that just long to find out who we are, and hope, upon hope, that our father, mother, siblings or other biological family might be there to accept us.

It's not just YOUR DNA and we have no building blocks to reconstruct our lives, unless you share.

Please consider also supporting the little ones in us that are just seeking answers. We've been missing answers and missing out for a long time. We want to come home to who we are, or shall I say, who we were supposed to be.

Recently I was in conversation with marketing and media folks, telling my story. Talking about genetic genealogy, and the "work."

In both occasions, I was told that there was not a good enough visual, like a crime scene, or something to entice the viewer...

That brought me back to South Florida, growing up, with a television station known for "If it bleeds, it leads."

No apologies, but NO, that's not what THIS work is about. It's not what I'm about either.

It's about BASIC, HUMAN, DIGNITY. The over 14,700 unidentified human remains cases in the United States, and what I'm personally trying to do to solve them.

I can't imagine any one of my family members' bones strewn about a desert, or worse, can you?

UGH.

The "sexy" part is putting that person to rest with dignity.

Telling their story and bringing relief to their relatives.

Finding our who THEY were, how they died, and if it was by someone else's hands.

The "sexy" part is being in service and a job well done.

Fast and accurate genetic genealogy investigations are important for a few reasons. Statue of limitations is one of them.

Many folks "love" genetic genealogy and spend time researching locales, perusing documents, and "learning" about family members.

It was fascinating in my own DNA Drama, but it doesn't cut it when there are criminals to catch and prosecute.

Plus, if you are a client paying on an hourly basis, you may have to stop work before the job is done. That's just not acceptable to me.

That's why it's important to build fast, identify quickly, and have the ability to know sooner, rather than later, when you are barking up the wrong tree.

The DNA and a properly built tree will reveal this.
