Troop 45
On June 9, 1921, the first charter for Troop 45 was issued. Sponsored by the Civic League of Mineola, Joseph Nohowec was the first Troop 45 Scoutmaster.
During the next 14 years there were 4 Scoutmasters and in 1929 the Troop produced their first Eagle Scouts. Many of the Scouts involved with the Troop during these years grew to become well known adults in Nassau, getting involved in many areas of civic life in the county. In 1935 John Svoboda became Scoutmaster; a position he would hold, excluding the WWII years of 43-45, till 1973. In 1937, Mr.
I sit here on this foggy Friday morning reflecting on another year gone by without our friend, our brother, Andrew. While time may heal wounds, the scars left behind will last a lifetime. Andrew, along with the enitre Desiderio family, remains a permanent staple in the grand history and legacy of Troop 45 today. The light that Andrew brought to this world and to our Troop has miraculously grown brighter and brighter as the years have passed. To our scouts- when we earn ranks at our court of honors we encourage you to turn around and express affection and gratitude to your families. When you are young you might roll your eyes and feel awkard but it is a very important yet simple lesson Troop 45 tries to teach you. Family is first. Your family will now and forever be your biggest supporters and an endless source of love and encourgement. As a young man it is important to realize that as early as you can so that each hand shake, each hug, each kiss means a little more. So do your scoutmaster a favor, read the message below and before the day is over give your familes a hug and kiss.
The Scout slogan is “Do a Good Turn Daily.” It is part of the third point of the Scout Law - “A Scout is helpful.” And it is part of your Scout Oath - “… to help other people at all times.” The slogan does not mean for you to do one Good Turn during the day and then stop. On the contrary, it means to do at least one Good Turn a day. It means looking for opportunities to help and then helping, quietly and without boasting. When you first become a Scout, it may seem difficult for you to find a daily chance to do a Good Turn. But soon you learn to keep your eyes open and somehow there seems to be an opportunity around every corner. By acting on them, you prove yourself a real Scout. Some Good Turns are big things; saving a human life at the risk of loosing your own… rescue work in floods… service in hurricane-stricken areas… helping to fight a forest fire… working with your patrol on a conservation project… giving younger boys a good time in Cub Scouting by working as a den chief. But Good Turns more often are small things, thoughtful things; helping a child cross the street… clearing trash off the highway… picking up broken glass from the street… telephoning the power company to report a live wire. Remember always that a Good Turn is an extra act of kindness, not just something you do because it is good manners. On this day each year we honor and remeber the life and legacy of Troop 45 Eagle Scout, 2 time scout of the year, vigil honor recipient and former Senior Patrol Leader Andrew Desiderio. As Andrew's legacy is taught and passed down to each Troop 45 scout we remmeber that he represented the best of us. The epitome of what it means to be a Troop 45 scout. Andrew's legacy reminds us all to live each day by the scout oath, law, slogan and motto. In honor of Andrew Desiderio's memory and legacy we ask all scouts, scouters, and Troop 45 family members to do a good turn today, a simple act of kindness. 🦅
In Loving Memory of Andrew V. Desiderio 08/29/1999-04/12/2021
The Best of Us
