Last week, Nancy Zalusky Berg and Ruta Johnsen had the honor of hosting judicial leaders from Taiwan investigating International Parental Child Abduction. International parental child abductions, interstate, and international jurisdictional issues, as well as international considerations in our legal matters are amongst more complex legal issues Team NZB frequently handles, and we are always happy to engage in discussions and share our expertise with other professionals.

Today we say farewell to Katie Kelley, who is leaving Team NZB. We wish you all the best in your next steps, and we will miss you (and Vida) dearly.

Nancy is taking a break from the Minnesota cold and her busy schedule to get up close and personal with the locals at the IAFL USA & Canadian Chapter Meeting in New Orleans.

It's a wrap for 2021. Our office is closed for the holidays starting December 24. Team NZB will resume regular business hours on January 3, 2022.

Congratulations to Katie for completing her first Court of Appeals argument, and knocking it out of the park even on Zoom.

Meet Jillian.

She is the newest and the spunkiest member of our team. Jillian is passionate, hard-working, hysterical, and a force to be reckoned with. She is a huge advocate for the LGBTQ rights.

Jillian is a self-proclaimed Francophile, who finally visited France for her 40th birthday. Upon her return home, to her parent’s great disappointment, she commemorated her travels by getting a tattoo of her passport stamps. As evidenced by her ink, Jillian is a rebel, and she is tough! Do not mess with her. When she is not pumping iron at StudioMe, she is floating in her pool, or catching up with a good book. Currently, on her nightstand are: Becoming Bulletproof by Evy Poumpouras and The Perfectionist: Life and Death in Haute Cuisine (I wonder if she will read them??).

Jillian’s (self-reported) greatest accomplishment to date is staying married for 10 years next March (wow, Jason, you also must be super tough), and parenting their adorable boss-daughter. Jillian says: “that sh*t is hard.” Yes, Jillian, that sh*t is indeed hard.

Jillian has always been a fan of music, likely inherited from her father who is a Grammy award winning Jazz musician, and her hero. She loves Bon Jovi, used to babysit for the drummer of the Smashing Pumpkins, and loves First Avenue (who doesn’t?!). Although Jillian loves a good concert, she is not a fan of crowds or lines for the bathroom…or country music.

Other things that Jillian is quite fond of: coffee (we like Jillian post coffee too), kayaking, cooking but NOT baking, StudioME, biking, France, wine, and MN United. When it comes to food, Jillian has quite the sophisticated pallet: medium rare steak, tacos anytime, escargot, specifically from Le Ceni’s in Montmartre (why, Jillian, why???).

Jillian is not a fan of quarantine but has put her time to good use by planting her own vegetable garden and growing her own French Breakfast Radishes. When this whole thing is over, Jillian intends to travel (a lot!).

I don’t know about you, but our takeaway here is: pool party at Jillian’s!

53 years ago today, in a landmark decision, SCOTUS struck down laws banning in*******al marriage. Five decades later, as we stand in support of black lives and justice, we reflect on how much and how little has changed.

Meet Ruta Johnsen. Since joining Nancy's group as a law clerk in 2015, Ruta has refused to leave the office ever since - three office moves in three years later! Ruta is courageous, caring and a pillar of Nancy Zalusky Berg, LLC.

Despite the problem Ruta sometimes faces in needing to duck under doorways, she still finds it necessary to sacrifice her feet for fashion. Ruta's courageous spirit in shoe selection extends to her sense of adventure outside of the office, scuba diving or skydiving, which she claims to have left in her responsible days. Winter is long in Minnesota, but not quite as long as in Alaska where according to Ruta, she spent too many years. In the end, her love of summer, sunlight every day of the year (and a law school) brought her to Minnesota to stay. That doesn't stop her from visiting a beach or staying near water every chance she gets.

Having immigrated from Lithuania at age 17, Ruta's worldly perspective influences the depth of her practice from working within the local community to navigating international matters. When not traveling with her husband and girls, or indulging in being Nancy's guest at some amazing international CLEs, Ruta values being at home with her family and sweet pup, Crosby.

Meet Monica Stephenson.

Monica is our Administrative Assistant. She joined our team in 2019 and is the first friendly face you meet when entering our office.

Monica has done quarantine right! She has spent her time Playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons, watched the Game of Thrones series again, and has been exploring the empty city on foot. Monica has also enjoyed having picnics at the capitol.

Monica is a woman of many talents. In 2014, Monica won second place in a Prince look-alike contest.
