Governor Tim Walz has ordered all U.S. & Minnesota flags to fly at half-staff starting today to honor Minneapolis Police Department Officer Jamal Mitchell who died in the line of duty.
“Minnesota mourns the loss of Officer Jamal Mitchell, a dedicated public servant & hero in his community who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting his neighbors. Our first responders are first to step in during crisis. We must never take their commitment for granted, & we must ensure they can answer their call of duty without fearing for their own lives.”
Individuals, businesses & other organizations are also encouraged to join in lowering their flags.
The City of Minneapolis Government & Minneapolis Police Department have identified the officer killed today as Jamal Mitchell.
He had been with the department for just over a year.
Just 3 days on the job, Ofc. Mitchell rescued 2 people from their burning home.
Today, he ran towards danger to help those injured & lost his life. He will be remembered as a hero.
Our deepest condolences to Ofc. Mitchell's family & child he leaves behind.
Please keep our law enforcement partner & colleagues at the Minneapolis Police Department in your thoughts & prayers.
