KUTHU WORKSHOP - SAATH X WISCONSIN SURMA

Founded in 2009, Wisconsin Surma is Wisconsin’s premier co-ed Bollywood fusion dance team.
We bring students from all levels of experience to perform a routine consisting of a variety of genres in dance such as Contemporary, Hip Hop, Bhangra, Bollywood, and Indian Classical.

Their mission is to create a valued, respected community which empowers our dancers and, overall, forms long-lasting friendships.

Being part of a well-established and student-loved team based out of Wisconsin, we have had the opportunities to travel across the states to participate in various competitions. These experiences have only made us more creative and more eager to grow this larger community of South-Asian inspired dance forms in the US.

Apart from holding various workshops, our goal with this workshop is to engage the South Asian community and bring together our love for dance to a city with vibrant and established dance culture, such as Minneapolis.

This also marks their first collaboration with not just a Surma Alum but with the founders of Surma itself!

Sahana Shivanand is a joy filled arts leader and curater who is passionate about, global artist collaborations, Indian folk artist community empowerment, arts education, and social justice. Originally from Bangalore, Sahana currently lives in Seattle, where she pursues her PhD in Arts and Cultural Management. She holds an MBA in Creative Leadership from UK, along with certifications on contemporary dance training at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, New York.

Sahana is trained in Indian Classical dance and folk dances, and she hopes to spread the art to keep the art form alive and empower artists. She has been a fellow for the Arts Council in Seattle area and worked with various nonprofits, arts organisations such as Bengaluru International Film Festival, Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, Shorelake Arts, and others.

Through her work, Sahana aims to work ‘with’ and not ‘for’ the community she serves.
