A Fresh Start--Do faith-based programs work to rehabilitate criminal offenders?
Amanda Allen was born addicted to he**in and alcohol, and became a victim of s*x abuse, neglect and domestic violence. She grew up with a drug-addicted mother in Oklahoma who “partied 365 days of the year,” according to the Prison Project. She describes fearing the sun setting and assessing “every new person who came in the room (to) try to figure out who they would mo**st first — me, my mom or my sister.” Amanda eventually succumbed to addiction herself and was charged with drug conspiracy, resulting in federal prison time. When she was released from prison, she was unable to find a job. She applied for 188 jobs with no success but eventually came across Renée La Montagne Dunn, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who runs the Prison Project. Dunn volunteered to coach Amanda. Today, Amanda credits the program, and Dunn’s belief in her, with turning her life around.
Dunn was motivated by her own faith, and experiences helping a daughter struggling with addiction, to start the Prison Project, which makes faith in a higher power central to recovery. She works with people of diverse faiths, including Muslims, Hindus and Christians, and she says that through her experience in addiction recovery she has found “people are just more successful when they are accountable to their God.” www.GOBrokentoBeautifulFoundation.org

I MISS MY MOM. (by her daughter, Rene’e La Montagne Dunn – 5/12/24)

I MISS HER--that strawberry-blond person sitting in the red chair, playing crosswords, legs tucked up close to her bottom, her right arm on the arm rest, pencil in right hand, newspaper all folded up as she guessed away at those blank open spaces that would eventually contain letters and words. Every night, more crinkles and crackles pickled the leather arm of that red chair, proving that someone bunkered up there… content… reliable… routine… showing years of life-habits and wear and tear. All my friends came to my house because… they loved that woman in the red leather crinkle-armed chair.

I miss her. She found fun everywhere; laughed out loud and loudly laughed more than anyone I have ever known. Everyone who knew her, loved her. Her voice carried across, and you could hear her giggles over the tops of the clinging and clanging at restaurants and taverns, and pool halls. She was infectious; a malignant character that wrapped all around you, never knowing a stranger, always pulling people in to feel loved, appreciated, important.

I miss her. I can still hear that shrill whistle for my Dad when two fingers somehow curled around her lips and that loud “love call” would wrangle my Dad in if they got separated in Costco. Hilarious… that whistle. But my nearly deaf Dad would always hear it and follow the sound. He said he loved her the most.
I miss her--that woman who was matriarch of our family of (4) pool hustlers. (Yep—that was my life, folks!) She followed my infamous pool-shark Dad from bar to bar, tavern to tavern, and while he was busy “running the table,” she would often pick up a cue-stick to clean up the egos of many a non-believer. I remember one hilarious evening, especially, when my 68-year-old Mom hustled up some cocky Mosconi-wanna-bees in my daughter’s bar in WY, and cleaned out the pockets of those young bucks who doubted an ole’ lady could shark them into losing a few dozen hustled 8-ball games!
I miss her. I miss the wonderful aromas coming from the kitchen: Swedish pancakes, red beans and rice, stuffed Cornish game hens, and pot roast. I miss cooking in the kitchen with her, and playing pool together, and hearing her voice ask me to play the piano again for her. I miss watching Dad tease her. I miss playing Montana together, and Double Solitaire, and Mexican Train down by the river at our cabin on the American River near South Lake Tahoe, and perming her hair, and changing the sheets together on our beds each week.
I miss her. I WILL NEVER FORGET the day my Dad was show-casing his pool-playing trick shots to all the grandkids. Shot after shot he made evoking very surprised ooohs and ahhhs from all the kids. Then, with much dramatic fan-fair, he laid my Mom across the end of the pool table (the foot rail), and told her to lie very still. He put the 8-ball in her mouth. The object was to shoot the 8-ball OUT of her mouth with the Q-ball; the 8-ball would FLY through the air and land ON the pool table, and it would then HIT another group of balls that would DROP MIRACULOUSLY into the side pockets of the pool table. But, every time my Dad would get posed up to blast that 8-ball out of my Mom’s mouth, my Mom would start giggling, and her belly would start bouncing, and my Dad would start laughing, and he’d say, “Betty! Ya gotta keep still now!” and so they would try all over again. (The grandkids were laughing hysterically!) My Mom laid there with the 8-ball in her mouth, Dad held his pointer finger up to his mouth to shush the kids, and then he would pose up, concentrating on the shot… then, of course, (you got it…), her belly would start bouncing, and the kids would start giggling, and Dad would act very annoyed, and he’d say again, “Betty!! Ya GOTTA LAY STILL!” The giggles and guffaws erupted and the whole scene was chaos. More belly bouncing. More giggling. But, FINALLY… my Dad made that REMARKABLE TRICK SHOT and all those balls went into their assigned pockets. (We got it all on film, folks…. And IT IS FUNN-EEE—and truly, a MIRACLE!)
I miss her. She supported me in everything I did. Was always on the sidelines, cheering me on. A daughter’s best friend. She participated in my life. In everything. She paved the way to my becoming me and taught me the values of working hard, never giving up, and always being true to my word. I will never forget the look in her eye—and the feelings in my heart—when she said so many times, “I love you, Rene’e.”
I miss her--that soft heart that cried at every tender moment, bringing sweetness to my life and a sense of awe as I learned from the example of a woman who felt deeply, cared, and just loved. She lived for her family—and to tell you how proud she was of being a new grandmother (“Nana”), she wrapped up the first goo-ey poo-poo diaper of her very first grandbaby, packed it in a baggy, and proudly displayed it and bragged at work that the sack of gold squish came from her very first grandbaby girl! Strange. Silly. But, oh, was she so much fun!
Thankfully, I NOW HAVE THE RED LEATHER CRINKLE-ARMED CHAIR. And every time I walk by it, I see a bit of heaven, and all that the strawberry blond woman left behind, playing her crosswords, looking up at me and saying, “I love you, Rene’e.” The crinkles display a life lived who loved hard, played hard, and found the best in people. And in me.
I miss my mom—and the sound of her laughter clear across the room. I miss the silliness, the sweetness, and the love she had for life. And for me. Gosh… thank goodness God blessed us with memories.
And when my turn comes, and I follow her up to those Pearly Gates, I will hear her shrill whistle to come join her as she wrangles me in with my Dad and little brother to play a few games of 8-ball with St. Peter. She will wrap her arms around me, hug me tight, and whisper in my ear, “I’ve missed you, Rene’e,” and I will say, “Mom, I love you the most.”
(My kids will have to fight over the red leather crinkle-arm chair.)
