Today marks the first day of . To mark this holiday we worked with Fahmida Azim to learn what the holiday means to her and her family. Here's what she had to say: “Ramadan is a month-long holiday where we fast from dawn to dusk everyday for a month. No food or drink of any kind. I think the longest I’ve gone is 17 hours a day. My favorite part of the whole practice is the first bite of food after a long day of fasting. There’s a whole dramatic countdown where every second feels like an eternity, all the self-denial and anticipation comes to a head, but this magical thing happens where no matter what the food is - it always tastes like the best meal ever.
Right after that first bite I can physically feel gratitude flooding my system. I feel thankful to have people who care enough to share a meal with me. I’m thankful that I can choose to fast, ‘cause there’s lots of people who don’t get to choose. I’m also proud of being able to strengthen my discipline. I haven’t been able to do Ramadan the past few years, but all the years I celebrated with my family made me a better version of myself.”

What’s Anthropology All About?
Anthropology is a diverse and comprehensive discipline that investigates the biological and cultural life of human beings across time and space. An anthropology degree provides students with an appreciation of other ways of life and a better understanding of the world in which they live.
The department of anthropology at Saddleback College is committed to teaching each of the four sub-fields of the discipline: archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and linguistic anthropology. The department also has a strong emphasis on the study of contemporary issues, such as ethnic and transnational identity, political conflict and social movements, human rights and indigenous rights, the cross-cultural making and meaning of race and gender, and the anthropological study of science.
