🚧 Upcoming Lane Closures Near Lamar Ave & I-35 ⚠️

The Kansas Department of Transportation 🚧 will soon start installing new traffic signals at the Lamar Ave & I-35 intersection.

To safely complete this project, there will be temporary turn lane and shoulder closures on Lamar Ave from Thursday, November 30th to Wednesday, December 20th. We expect periodic daily closures and some flagging operations to direct traffic.

🚥Most work will happen behind shoulder closures, but equipment and drill rigs will need brief lane closures too. 🚜

Please notice signage and flags, allow extra time for possible minor delays, and drive safely through the area! 🚦 We apologize for the inconvenience, but this is an important infrastructure improvement to boost safety and traffic flow at Lamar & I-35. 🛣️

Even though I voted NO on this development agreement back in January, I am still disappointed to see a failed agreement for a fifth time. As I shared at Monday night’s meeting— Mission deserves better.

On Monday night the Council took action to terminate the redevelopment agreement for the Mission Gateway project. The City issued a notice of default on May 15, 2023, for failure to timely pay real estate taxes and assessments, and the developer was given 60 days to cure the default. Mayor Flora commented that, “The developer failed to take advantage of that opportunity and the Council felt strongly that it was appropriate to terminate the redevelopment agreement; that agreement captured the details of the public/private incentives that were negotiated and finalized in January 2023."

Mayor Flora went on to say, "This Council and others over the last 17+ years have demonstrated a willingness to work cooperatively with the developer to bring a project to fruition, but it was time for the City to take a step back and evaluate our options. I can speak with confidence in saying that the Council is open to reviewing and evaluating public/private partnerships going forward." During the meeting Mayor Flora also communicated that, "While the redevelopment agreement has been terminated, the City does not own or control the site. I know our residents and businesses, along with the Council, want to see something develop, but the action taken by the Council on Monday doesn't accelerate any development timeframe."

07/17/2023

Mayor Sollie Flora has scheduled a special meeting of the City Council for 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 17 for the purpose of considering the uncured default by the developer in the redevelopment agreement for the Mission Gateway project. The meeting materials and a link to participate in the meeting virtually can be found at https://tinyurl.com/32rur62r .

According to Mayor Flora, "The developer was given a notice of default on May 15, 2023, for failure to timely pay real estate taxes and assessments, and was given 60 days to cure the default. With the expiration of the cure period, it is now appropriate that the Council review and discuss all alternatives available to the City under the terms of the redevelopment agreement."
