⚠️ Important Pet Health Alert: Heat Stroke in Pets ⚠️

With the soaring temperatures we’re experiencing here in the Rio Grande Valley, it’s crucial to stay vigilant about the risk of heat stroke in our pets. High temperatures can be dangerous, and it’s our responsibility to keep our furry friends safe.

Signs of Heat Stroke in Pets:

• Excessive Panting: While panting is normal, excessive or rapid panting could be a sign of overheating.
• Lethargy: If your pet is unusually tired or weak, it might be struggling with the heat.
• Drooling: Excessive drooling, especially when combined with other symptoms, is a red flag.
• Vomiting or Diarrhea: Heat stroke can cause stomach issues, which are often a sign that your pet needs immediate help.
• Red or Pale Gums: Check your pet’s gums—red or very pale gums can indicate overheating.
• Uncoordinated Movements: If your pet is staggering or seems disoriented, it could be suffering from heat stroke.
• Collapse: In severe cases, pets may collapse or become unresponsive.

Prevention Tips:

• Stay Indoors During Peak Heat: Avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for early morning or late evening walks instead.
• Provide Plenty of Water: Ensure your pet always has access to fresh, cool water.
• Shade and Ventilation: If your pet is outside, make sure there’s plenty of shade and good airflow.
• Never Leave Pets in Cars: Temperatures inside a parked car can rise rapidly, even with windows cracked. Leaving your pet in a car for any length of time can be fatal.
• Know Your Pet’s Limits: Older pets, those with health conditions, and certain breeds (like brachycephalic dogs) are more susceptible to heat stroke. Be extra cautious with them.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heat stroke, act quickly! Move your pet to a cooler area, offer water, and contact your veterinarian immediately.

At Mission Veterinary Hospital, we’re here to help you keep your pets safe and healthy. Stay alert, stay cool, and let’s get through this summer together!

For this week’s , we’re turning the spotlight on Parvovirus, a highly contagious and potentially deadly virus that primarily affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs. Our skilled vet tech, Edith, is here to share valuable insights on this serious condition.

What is Parvovirus?
Parvovirus, often called “Parvo,” is a virus that attacks a dog’s intestinal tract, leading to symptoms like severe vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. It’s especially dangerous for young puppies who haven’t yet completed their vaccination series.

How do we treat it?
Treatment for Parvovirus requires immediate and aggressive care. At Mission Veterinary Hospital, we focus on supportive care, which includes IV fluids to combat dehydration, medications to control vomiting and diarrhea, and antibiotics to prevent secondary infections. Unfortunately, there’s no cure for the virus itself, but with prompt and intensive treatment, many dogs can recover.

How can you prevent it?
Prevention is key when it comes to Parvovirus. Ensure your dog is vaccinated according to your vet’s recommended schedule, starting as a puppy. Keep your pet away from unvaccinated dogs and avoid areas where Parvo is known to be present, such as dog parks or boarding facilities with a history of outbreaks. Regularly disinfecting your dog’s living environment also helps in preventing the spread of this virus.

We’re committed to keeping your furry friends safe and healthy. Stay tuned for more tips and information in our upcoming posts!
