Have you ever heard of relapse justifications?
Relapse justifications, often known as rationalizations, are a set of thoughts, beliefs, or reasons that individuals in recovery might tell themselves to justify resuming substance use.
These justifications can be subtle and sometimes deceptive, often serving as a way to make relapse seem acceptable or less harmful.
Recognizing these justifications is crucial in maintaining sobriety, as they can be warning signs of an impending relapse.
Common relapse justifications include:
☑️Minimizing the Problem: Believing that one can control their use this time or thinking that a little bit won’t hurt. For example, “I can just have one drink, and then I’ll stop.”
☑️Denying the Consequences: Convincing oneself that the negative consequences experienced previously won’t happen again. Example: “Last time was bad because of other factors, not the drinking itself.”
☑️Feeling Overconfident: Believing that they’ve overcome their addiction to the point where using again won’t lead to a relapse. Example: “I’ve been sober for a year; I can handle it now.”
☑️Stress and Emotional Distress: Using stressful life events or emotional pain as a reason to use. Example: “I’m just too stressed, and this is the only thing that helps.”
☑️Celebratory Justifications: Using a special occasion or achievement as an excuse to use. Example: “It’s my birthday; one drink won’t hurt.”
☑️Feeling Cured: Believing that they are cured and no longer need to adhere to their recovery plan. Example: “I don’t feel like an addict anymore, so it’s okay.”
☑️Social Pressure: Succumbing to social environments or peer pressure where substance use is involved. Example: “Everyone else is doing it, and I don’t want to be left out.”
☑️Testing Personal Control: Wanting to test oneself to see if they can use substances without falling back into old patterns. Example: “I’ll just try it once to prove to myself that I’m over it.”
Can you relate to any of these?

STILL THINK MENTAL ILLNESS
SHOULD BE KEPT A SECRET❓️❓️
Statistics indicated that 1 in 5 U.S. Adults are living with a mental health disorder and 1 in 8 Adults WORLDWIDE which is about 450 million people currently live with a mental health disorder. Which means you personally know several people managing their lives despite having a mental health disorder.
Mental Disorders are complex and have different levels of severity: MILD, MODERATE, SEVERE. The earlier a person seeks therapy will decrease their risk of developing severe mental illness. People often fail to seek therapy because of their limited awareness of the mental health symptoms, stigma associated mental health treatments, and limited access to mentalhealth resources.
So, How Can You Help?
(1) Keep Educating Yourself About Mental Health & Mental Illness.
(2) Normalize discusses about mental health with your medical professional, your family/friends, and even on your job.
(3) Complete Annual Mental Health Screenings during your annual physicals.
(4) Ask your medical insurance about your mental and behavioral health benefits, and if you do not have coverage, then request coverage. Did You Know That Many Employers Now Offer EAP Benefits Which Allows An Employee and/or Family Members of the Employee FREE COUNSELING SERVICES To Address Issues Such As Marriage & Family, Grief, Anxiety, Job Stress, and Other Issues? These FREE COUNSELING SESSIONS can total anywhere from 3-10 sessions per year, depending on your EAP plan.
Mental Illness Can No Longer Be Kept a Secret💯
