Injuries look like -
βPain that feels sharp, achy, or a βzingerβ
βNumbness and/or tingling (not always, but sometimes) βPain that improves with rest but returns when you do
activity
βConfusion as to why you have discomfort A gut feeling that something isnβt right
While soreness looks like -
βMild to moderate discomfort
βSevere discomfort IF you did an exceptionally hard workout, had a recent psychological stressor, are getting sick, or arenβt sleeping/eating well
βPain that improves with rest and does not return with activity
β2-3 days (on average) but can span 1-7 days
βKnowing why you have discomfort
βEveryone else at the gym complaining of the same thing

If youβre dealing with pain and in regards to exercise you donβt know whether to hit the gas or to hit the breaks, think through the traffic signal analogy:
π’ Green Light: GO
= No pain to minimal pain during the activity
-> Chances are its safe.
π΄ Red Light: STOP
= Activity creates very high levels of pain
-> Use common sense and stop
π‘ Yellow Light: PROCEED WITH CAUTION
= Moderate pain during the activity
-If the activity starts with zero to minimal pain and the pain raises to moderate levels AND the increase of pain returns to baseline within a 24 hours...
-> this is a yellow light
THINGS YOU CAN DO TO MOVE A RED LIGHT TO A YELLOW LIGHT OR A YELLOW LIGHT TO A GREEN LIGHT:
Modify. Modify. Modify.
Here are some variables you can MODIFY to decrease the pain while still getting your movement on:

There are a lot of reasons reasons that physical therapy doesnβt work has a LOT to do with your rehab environment, the specialty of your PT and how hard youβre willing to work for your goals!
Things to consider:

Muscle Repair & Growth: During sleep, the body releases growth hormone, crucial for muscle development, repair, and overall recovery from physical strain or injury. The deeper stages of sleep promote protein synthesis, aiding in muscle recovery and growth.
Enhanced Cognitive Function: Sleep is fundamental for cognitive processes like memory consolidation, learning, decision-making, and reaction time. Athletes need sharp mental faculties for strategic play and quick responses during training or competitions.
Hormonal Balance: Lack of sleep can disrupt hormonal balance, particularly affecting hormones like cortisol (stress hormone) and leptin/ghrelin (hunger-regulating hormones).
This imbalance can lead to increased stress, reduced appetite control, and potentially hindered recovery.

Do you feel confident in squatting?
One of the things that a lot of people arenβt confident in doing is performing a good squat. It is one the most common questions we get asked when people come in. βAm I doing this right?β
Here is a quick checkpoint list to performing a good squat.
1οΈβ£ Keep your head up while doing the squat.
2οΈβ£ Have your chest up: you want to still keep the spine neutral, but not have an excessive forward lean
3οΈβ£ Make sure that your feet stay flat on the ground: No heels coming up
4οΈβ£ You hips should be able to hit parallel: if you can go deeper great, but they should at least hit parallel

While icing any area right after an injury is not going to be detrimental to the injury, there aren't many signs to show that it is super helpful either.
The main problem with icing an injury right after it happens is that can hinder the inflammatory process (which is the first stage of healing). If the first stage is limited that means that all other stages are going to be limited as well.
Now we are preaching PEACE and LOVE: Protect, Elevate, Avoid ice and anti-inflammatories, Compression, and Education Load, Optimism, Vascularization, and Exercise. All this is simply broken down to MOVE AS TOLERATED.

The truth is the deadlift is a great exercise, it is super sad that it is often villainized.
A deadlift is simply picking up an object off of the floor (how many times do you do that a day?) There is nothing inherently wrong with the exercise, the problem comes from how the exercise is performed.
If you want to build a strong back and overall strength, then the deadlift is the exercise for you.

Often what is happening is you are working past what your body is capable of handling, either in a mobility standpoint or a weight standpoint. When the body is no longer happy with the increased stress being placed on it, it starts to bark back with pain.

One of the main things that brings people in for physical therapy is getting rid of some pain they are dealing with. The problem though is they often think that as soon as they get rid of the pain, they are completely healed and can go back to life as normal.
What usually happens then is that the pain just comes back a few weeks later cause the root cause of the injury wasn't fully addressed and the surrounding areas weren't strengthened. This puts people in a cycle of pain and limitations with very little hope that this issue will be fully resolved.
