After Hours Staff Tea Time. We always gather together at the beginning of a new menu to do a taste test. Plus, it’s a lot of fun. For tea we had the Hong Kong iced milk tea, and the Masala Chai Rooibos prepared in the authentic style with milk and sugar. Check out the tea menu showcasing teas from the countries in the book: Around the World in 80 Days. Be sure to make your reservations for this fun menu.

Around the World in 80 Days Afternoon Tea is off on an adventure. Are you ready to join us? Sample some international cuisine and tea from around the world for a truly unique afternoon tea experience. Be sure to make your reservations.

09/03/2024

Around the World in 80 Days Afternoon Tea is the themed afternoon tea for September. Inspired by the classic novel by Jules Verne. Join Phileas Fogg and his companions on their mad dash around the world and sample some delicious international cuisine and tea along the way. Check it out! If you are unfamiliar with the story, that's alright. You can pick up an book in the library and read it, or watch one of the many movie versions available. The one by Masterpiece Theater (on Prime) is particularly well done, though they stray from the book's story line, which is no surprise. Or you can just come and enjoy some unique and delicious international fare and tea and you will have a wonderful time. Be sure to make your reservations. This menu is available September 4 to 28, 2024. Wednesday to Saturday, 11 am to 3 pm. Bonus Sunday is Sept. 22. $33/adult. If you want sparkling wine or mimosas, you can request the "Royal Option" at the time of making your reservation and your total price will be $40/adult. $17/children age 10 and under. Items with an (*) asterisk are the children's items. Reservations are required at least one day in advance. To request a reservation call the tea room at 209-622-0811 or send an email through the website at DragonflyTeaRoom.net.

Sister Suffragette - Mary Poppins (Glynis Johns) 08/27/2024

Happy Women's Equality Day. Today we celebrate the passing of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote in the United States. Our sisters across the pond had a similar fight as well. Mrs. Banks from Mary Poppins was in the middle of the fight with enthusiasm! Tea rooms played a significant role in providing a place where women could meet away from the prying eyes of men, so they could strategize and encourage each other. These are a couple of articles, one about the UK and the other about the USA.

Today just happens to be Women’s Equality Day as we commemorate the passing of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote in the United States. One of my favorite side stories of the Mary Poppins movie is that Mrs Banks is part of the Suffrage Movement in England. I’ll be doing another post with more information about the role of tea rooms in the Suffrage Movement in both the UK and the USA.

Some lovely ladies in their fun hats and fashion. A mother-daughter pair with Mary Poppins hats, a group of ladies with beautiful dresses and hats, and my good friend, Lynne, in her Mary Poppins goes to the beach attire. You don’t have to dress up to come to afternoon tea, but it’s a lot of fun if you do. One more week left of the Mary Poppins Afternoon Tea! Be sure to make your reservations!

Do you know how to eat a crumpet? Just watch! Crumpets are a delightful English bread and comfort food, characterized by lots of holes in the surface to capture all the melted butter and jam that gets slathered all over it, right out of the toaster. You won’t want to leave anything behind.

Mary Poppins Afternoon Tea has been soaring to new heights. We have a Flight of Tea Sandwiches, crumpets with butter and jam, and 3 Spoons of Sugar. It’s a jolly holiday for sure. Have you made your reservations? The last day is August 31.

Oh...It's a Jolly Holiday with Mary! Mary Poppins had a delightful way of turning the ordinary into something extraordinary and bringing out the best in others. Drawing on inspiration from the original Mary Poppins movie, and the newer Mary Poppins Returns, this menu is sure to delight those of all ages. I highly encourage you to watch both movies (I found both on Disney) to reacquaint yourself with Mary and the other characters, along with the stories and music. Such fun!

We are in the thick of blueberry season! I love going out to Vanderhelm Farms on my day off and picking blueberries. It’s so therapeutic and relaxing. Plus we use all those delicious blueberries in many of our items. Blueberries are so good for you too. Store bought blueberries just don’t cut it. Check it out!

In addressing this controversial question…

Afternoon tea is not the same as High tea.

High tea was what servants of a large house ate downstairs at around 6pm, after the aristocrats upstairs had been given their afternoon tea.

On the servants menu were things like large joints of meat (often a roasted ham), slices of thick bread, potted shrimps, a big cake to share, and ale. Tea replaced ale when it became affordable for ordinary people.

It was eaten at a proper table, rather than a lower, coffee table, and so it became known in the servants’ hall as ‘high tea.’

High tea is still observed in some institutions, more typically in nurseries, boarding schools, private nursing homes and gentleman’s clubs. It has otherwise lost the ‘High’ and ‘tea’ is widely used as a colloquial term for dinner.

Afternoon tea is typically served between 12 and 4pm. The upper class Victorians who invented the rules of this ceremony ate dinner after 8pm. Made up of several courses, it finished late into the night.

Afternoon tea consists of tea served with three courses, also eaten in the order of: i) sandwiches (which may include the addition of bite size savouries) ii) scones and iii) sweets (cakes and small individual desserts).

When served with champagne, it is called a Royal Afternoon tea.

Cream tea is tea served with scones only. Scones are traditionally offered as plain or fruit and served with clotted cream and strawberry jam.

However, having said all this, some hotels in London will capitalise on tourist trade. Serving Afternoon tea from as early as 10.30am until 7pm at night. Even adopting the name High tea in their promotions.

There is a foreign notion which assumes ‘High tea’ is synonymous with ‘High society.’

Whilst nothing to lose sleep about, I hope you agree that it’s helpful to explain the history behind traditional practises.

Sending hugs ❤️ Claire
