In observance of Juneteenth, the MLK Center is closed today.
The Emancipation Proclamation legally ended slavery in January 1863. However, enforcement was slow in some southern states. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger announced federal orders in Galveston, Texas, proclaiming that all people held as slaves in Texas were free. Today we honor and celebrate June 19th -- Juneteenth -- as the symbolic end of slavery in the USA.
Doing activities with your child in support of Pride month not only nurtures a strong sense of community, but also promotes essential social and emotional skills, all while having fun together!
