Montclair Film’s upcoming Summer Series includes a screening of the award-winning documentary, SUGARCANE, about a now shuttered Canadian boarding school (St. Joseph’s Mission School in British Columbia) where the presence of multiple unmarked graves of students have been discovered. The film is co-directed by Julian Brave NoiseCat, the son of a survivor of that school and features his father and grandmother. It won the jury prize for documentary direction at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

As Variety so effectively states: "The school, which did not close until 1981, was one of many state-supported institutions — 139 in Canada, 408 in the United States — operated for more than a century to deal with “the Indian problem” by more or less brainwashing children into forgoing their Native languages and customs. It’s altogether likely that many non-Indigenous people knew nothing about the abuse and disappearances of Native American children that occurred over decades in residential Indian schools throughout North America until those outages inspired a wrenchingly potent subplot last year for the Taylor Sheridan-produced TV series “1923.” But the truth behind that fact-based fiction is even more shocking, and infuriating, as detailed in “Sugarcane,” the remarkable film that received a well-deserved jury prize for documentary direction at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.”

The film will be released online via NatGeo in the future, but this is a subject that I think, especially when lensed by the survivors, deserves to be seen on a bigger screen, in the dark, with community around us.

The hardest thing about being in real estate is when you have a quiet spell and other agents are insanely busy. Then, for me, one of my clients reaches out to tell me how much my help meant to them, and I remember all the nuances of their search, the house with the old tv in the wall. The little welcome video I made for them to play in it like a shadow box. I remember the day in the rain when I parked my too new car and put the brake on but didn't take it out of drive and it started beeping at me like a mad person. I remember the house they bid on and didn't get and we ended up being grateful because it had a really really bad mortar job. (and it was brick, so that mattered). And then another client sent me an astrology chart for the week that pretty much summed up the weekend experiences I had and said she was thinking of me, see, it was just natural that the weekend had been like that. If you think your realtor stays in it for the money, think again. Everyone works for a living. But we stay for so many, many of YOU.
