Ground Up Coffee: Our Philosophy
Our philosophy is simple: Great coffee leads to great adventures, conversations, and ideas.
We want to bring the best coffee possible to our community. The comfort you feel when taking the first sip, the optimism that follows, and the spontaneity that occurs when the cup is finished; that is what we’re all about! As two friends who grew up in the Montebello area we want to share our passion for coffee and life with our friends, families, and community. Plain and simple - we love coffee, we love what it stands for, and we want you to love it too!!
A little bit of everything we love—our space, our people, our drinks, and the moments in between.
Check out our FAQ’s to make your next visit smooth and easy 👌🏽☕️

Our matcha is ceremonial grade and made with love! Since we’ve opened we have only added a limited amount of items to our menu. We believe in a simple menu - but the request for matcha was so high that we felt we should listen to the people on this one. Glad we did! It’s been a hit. Happy Sunday… see you in a few minutes. ☀️
Weekends at Ground Up are poppin. It’s a fun time to be a barista. Having a line and drinks in the queue can be stressful but also pretty fun. Definitely prefer a rush over down time! Especially when your team is the best there is. Our baristas are the fastest gun slingers in the city. Sh*t… maybe in the world. I’d put our team up against any. 😎 let’s go… see you soon!
Iced vanilla cinnamon latte. 🤤 can you taste it?
Our hot latte is too notch. The way it looks like it’s going to over flow with a perfect mouth feel and creamy coffee to milk texture.
Fun fact - it can take a barista 6 months to learn how to do latte art. So if you see a barista draw you something appreciate the craft cuz it ain’t easy… we just make it look easy. 😋

We’ve been thinking a lot and have come to the place where we realize our story is an important one to tell. We always wanted to tell our story but it’s been hard to find the time, space, and energy while trying to build this business. We feel we are at a place to share more of who we are and our philosophy on life and business. We started this coffee shop and brand in 2016 because we believed in a vision and a lifestyle of what our life could look like. This road has not been an easy one. We wanted to quit several times - We almost did! To some people they walk into our shop and they don’t realize that almost every single item, design, or product has such a deep story attached to it. Everything was very intentional. We were sitting in the shop yesterday talking and reminiscing on all these stories and we thought, we should share these stories with the people who love our brand and what we’ve created. So that’s exactly what we are going to do. Share more… we are going to share vulnerable moments and beautiful moments.
I’ll start with this picture. Many people aren’t aware that Ground Up Coffee started as a table that we would set up and serve “pour over” coffees only. We didn’t have money for an espresso machine, yet. We didn’t have a location, yet. But, we believed in something. You don’t always know what it is or how to get there. Yet, we kept taking steps. In retrospect, every step was important and necessary. We do not regret the day we quit our “real jobs” to start making coffee for people. A lot of people didn’t believe in what we were doing. Some even made fun of us in passing jokes or comments. Some thought it was a phase that would pass. But we believed in each other and in something more. We’ve been best friends since 10th grade and have always supported each other through life. I will tell more of our story with future posts…
Cheers to coffee. Cheers to entrepreneurship. Cheers to paving your own lane. And cheers to all of you who have supported us over the years. We are excited to let you see a deeper version of our story and who we are.
We serve coffee. Incase you didn’t know. 😎
We got some shirts in - spring colors. Coffee brown and pink with pocket logo on the front and classic ground up logo on the back. Also, got some tote bags in tan and pink. 😎
Today came in to Ground Up Coffee to leave a signed copy of her book for our community. I read her book and it resonated deeply so I wrote to her and told her. She said she would love to come by the shop and leave a book. She’s authentic and the conversation was life giving to say the least. We chatted for a while and it’s always so refreshing to hear others who have been on a similar journey. This book speaks to so many of our stories and she is a voice and force to share with the world. If you have not read her book i HIGHLY recommend!!
Sweaters are back… come grab one before they sell out! Rep your favorite coffee shop. We added Montebello, CA to the sleeve.
Happy New Years. We are excited to announce that we are extending our hours. This will take effect NEXT WEEK Monday the 15th!! Spread the word… Cheers ☕️
We feel heartbroken. Fred is Daniel’s (co-owner) Dad. He meant a lot to us and was someone who supported the shop from the very beginning when we were just starting out.
A fund has been created to help Daniel and his wife, Sherry pay for the cost of memorial and services. If you’d like to support, you can find link in bio.
