Patients who have AT&T, please make sure your appointment is noted in your calendar as we are having problems with our texting app. AT&T seems to be filtering our messages and not sending them out, so you may not receive a reminder text for your appointment. Please call our office at 831-624-7244 with any questions. We are diligently working on resolving this.
Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush wonβt do a good job of cleaning your teeth and they just donβt look very pretty either. Be sure not to over-brush your teeth or brush too hard! This is known as toothbrush abrasion and can lead to receding gums and sensitive teeth as it wears down tooth enamel.
This is why it is so important for us to take x-rays for a new patient consultation and periodically throughout treatment. We need to see what's going on the inside too!
Two-Thirds of What Goes On in Your Mouth Is Below the Surface Orthodontists use x-rays to check below the surface to look for extra teeth, missing teeth, impacted teeth or teeth coming into the wrong positions.
If you just got braces put on or had them "tightened", you might experience a little soreness or tenderness. Here are some soft food suggestions that are great for the first day or two.

If you have braces and participate in sports or other rigorous activities, we recommend the Shock Doctor mouth guard. This will protect your teeth, gums, and brackets from damage.
If your child shows any of these issues, give us a call to schedule a new patient exam and learn how we can correct it!

Friendly Reminder Friday
If elastics are part of your treatment it is critical you wear them regularly! Change them often: after you eat, after you brush, right before bed, etc.
Not wearing elastics as prescribed is one of the main reasons treatment is slowed and patients are delayed in getting braces off.
Wednesday Word of the Day - Lower Lingual Arch
The lower lingual holding arch is a space maintaining appliance. It is most often used when the patient still has mixed dentition (baby teeth and permanent teeth). The LLHA or LLA is attached to the lower first molars and connected by a wire that runs along the inside of the lower teeth. It works to prevent lower molars from moving forward, where they could block permanent teeth from erupting properly.
Give us a call to schedule a New Patient Consultation to determine if your child is ready for orthodontic treatment! If your child is not ready just yet, Dr. Cassady will continue checking their teeth every few months until he determines they are ready to start.

Early Orthodontic Care May Help You Avoid Costly Treatments Orthodontic health can be more manageable if you get ahead of it. And it may help you avoid more costly or more invasive treatments down the road.
Have you skipped a few days (or weeks) of wearing your retainer? Don't fret!
My Retainer Feels Tight. Can I Still Wear It? As long as your retainer doesnβt hurt and still fits over your teeth, you can wear it β even if it feels tight. Your teeth may have slightly shifted, and you may need to wear your retainer longer each day to prevent your teeth from moving.

If you can feel a pokey wire from your braces, donβt fret! Here are some simple remedies that can help:
β
Call our office to schedule an appointment to repair the pokey wire.
β
Place orthodontic wax on top of the exposed wire and bracket. Before applying the wax, ensure the surface is clean and dry. Roll a small piece of wax to form a ball and gently press onto the area. You can pick up wax from our office or most stores in their oral health section.
β
In the event of tears or bruises from wires, rinse the mouth with a warm mixture of salt and water for at least sixty seconds. Repeat five to six times.
β
To prevent further injuries, stay away from food and drinks that irritate the mouth, such as popcorn and sweets.
β
The application of oral anesthetic gel can provide additional pain relief.
β
Regular intake of water can also help ease the pain.
