MPC Board Trustee Yuri Anderson - Changing the Narrative
For the last days of our Black History Month Matters Series, it is only right to interview MPC Board Trustee Yuri Anderson, a black leader who is changing the narrative about mental health, community college and her own history.
Anderson was born in Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan but raised in Prunedale. It is here, within her own community and family that she learned about civic engagement. Anderson recalls when Jesse Jackson came to town and her father took her out to march in the demonstration. She also remembers when her mother, a now retired grocery worker, would take her to out to the demonstrations when her mother’s union was striking.
“We were out there on the picket line, with her, yelling ‘No Scabs!’” - Trustee Yuri Anderson.
As with all of the prideful moments and lessons in volunteerism and activism, Anderson also made sure to not paint her past with nostalgia but also to tell the truth about the struggle with mental health that exists within her family. Yuri describes how has a child she witnessed domestic violence and issues of mental illness which in turn forced her to mature and think critically about how she wanted to raise her own children.
When speaking about the issue of mental illness, Yuri states, “I needed to break the circle of violence within my family”.
Lastly, Yuri spoke on her experience within education advocacy and how she originally wanted to impact k-12 education. But after her experience with graduate school and the surmounting debt she accumulated from her schooling experience, she realized that one of her goals was to advocate for making higher education accessible, which included de-stigmatizing community college.
This Black History Month, we celebrate Yuri Anderson and her many contributions to Monterey County as founding member of the Bright Futures for Monterey County Educational Partnerships, Vice President of Community Investments for United Way Monterey County and member of the BOD at Monterey County’s Child Abuse Prevention Council. Lastly, we are grateful for her strong words and poignant reminder that “Black History is not a month”.
MPC Trustee Rosalyn Green: A Piece of Seaside’s Rich Black History
When speaking with Board Trustee Rosalyn Green about Black History Month it is evident that her and her family contain stories and vignettes exemplifying the richness of black history. Green’s father and mother have their roots respectively in Lake Charles, Louisiana and Boley, Oklahoma. Green’s parents, migrating by way of the military, set roots in Seaside right before the Vietnam War. Green recalls those days of her childhood and adolescence in a predominantly black Seaside community as one that was close-knit and familial.
“I can recall going to the neighbor’s house for a cup of sugar or going over to share cable tv” – Trustee Green.
Green goes on to recall how she was shaped by not only the systemic racism and inequity she saw and faced within Monterey County but also through the civic duty exemplified through her mother’s example. She recalls her mother inviting important leaders such as Leon Panetta, Sam Farr, Lance McClaire and Chief Dave Butler for dinner or coffee to speak about bettering the community and social issues. Through these factors of seeing social inequity and developing a conscience for civic duty and community work, Green continues to be dedicated to her local community.
After high school, Green went on to study at MPC and shortly transferred to CSUMB where she graduated with her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies on the Teaching Pathway Tract (also important to note that two of Green’s uncles attended MPC; one still holding MPC football records and the other being the first African-American from Monterey County to be drafted to the NFL). Since then, Green has worked in a wide variety of settings such as a girl’s group home, The Village Project Inc., Building Healthy Communities and the Monterey County Supervisors District Office 4 to name a few.
As we celebrate Black History, this month and beyond, we uplift Rosalyn Green for her continued dedication and effort that she puts into building community; a community that she has known all her life.
