Did you see the newly redesigned Monticello Royal Ambassador Program float in the Riverfest Parade?
From Monticello to Minneapolis, Corn Carnivals to Fourth of July Festivities, Parties to Pandemics, the Monticello Royal Ambassador float has seen it all. Our float is a key part of how we represent ourselves to other towns during their yearly celebrations. For the past ten years, we were often recognized by our eye-catching float consisting of red, white, and blue tinsel topped off with swans and a steel replica of the old Monticello bridge.
Until now.
In a combined effort with the Royal Ambassador Committee, the Monticello Lions, Monticello Chamber of Commerce, we are so proud to announce our new Monticello Royal Ambassador Program Float! The float still features the homage to our old bridge and our beloved swans, but now highlights our beautiful riverside home through a design featuring grass, “water”, and a cedar-planked dock. The new float was revealed at the 2023 Walk and Roll, and was met with rave reviews from the Monticello community. Additionally, it has received many compliments from surrounding ambassador programs and communities.
The idea started from a sketch done by Nicole Hills, a Monticello Royal Ambassador Program Committee member. After multiple iterations, the committee, Chamber, and Lions came to an agreement on the proposed design and its funding, then remodel began. The first step was to strip the sparkles and staples off in order to rebuild the float from its foundation and avoid having ambassadors stepping on old staples through the new carpet. Well over 1000 staples were pulled out of the float’s subfloor! Then the true construction began.
Our new float was built entirely by Brad Schillewaert, husband of Royal Ambassador Committee Member Gina Schillewaert and dad of 2018-2019 Miss Monticello Grace Schillewaert. Using previous expertise, he was able to bring Nicole’s design to life through the use of turf, blue marine carpet, aluminum, cedar planks, cedar molding, and vinyl siding. The project took about five weeks and involved welding, stapling, cutting, measuring, measuring again, and many, many volunteer hours of work.
After the main design was complete, it was time to find the finishing touches to bring the float to life. Decorative grass, cattails, and wooden posts were added to bring some flair to the dock. For ease of transport (and design), boat cleats were added to the dock to serve as handles for the set up and take down of the float. Also, make sure to look closely during the Riverfest parade, you may find some hidden critters onboard!
In addition to Brad’s work, there were many other individuals involved in making this possible. The welding and aluminum cutting was a joint effort between Brad and Willie Ewing, owner of The Shock Shop. The new Monticello and Riverfest letters decorating the side and back of the float were made by Richard Crummy, previous Monticello shop teacher and owner of the Crummy Boys Shop Inc. The beautiful skirting was designed and sewn by community member, Lois Posusta with consultation help from the Annandale Royal Ambassador Program Coordinator.
Additionally, without support from key community businesses and organizations, none of this would have been possible. The Monticello Lions have been instrumental in their continued support and funding of the Monticello Royal Ambassador Program, and are honored with their emblem visible on the side of the float. West Metro Buick GMC has continued to provide us with beautiful trucks to tow the float with during our parade and the many others we attend. Loch Jewelers keeps our crowns shiny and has sponsored candidates alongside countless other businesses within Monticello. We cannot thank these individuals, businesses, and organizations enough. Most of all, we’d like to thank YOU, our Monticello community, for attending our events, saying hi, and supporting our program.

Mom's mission to bring therapy dogs to Minnesota schools is taking off If you're a student at Monticello Middle School, there's no way you don't know about Willow Grace. The therapy dog's weekly visits have made her something of a mascot at the school.

This was a challenging laser cutting job but as you can see it came out just .
This is an example of thinking outside the box
