Dear Friends of the Smiths Dog Lodge,
Perspective: For those interested in further insight and information regarding the respiratory illness in canine populations in various parts of the United States, we offer this report from the American Veterinary Medical Association.
We live in one of the "doggiest" communities on earth, and that is no exaggeration. In northern El Paso County, we estimate that at least 30,000 dogs are living relatively safe, happy, healthy, fully domesticated lives with their human companions. We have more veterinary clinics per capita than most people on the planet. And, in the US, we have some very intelligent people paying very close attention to what is going on with the current situation. Read this article. It offers explanation and historical context to how and why we might be struggling with this illness at this time. It also offers PERSPECTIVE on proper precautions that we all can undertake in an effort to minimize or eliminate the risk of our dogs being impacted by this problem.
We are living in a POST-PANDEMIC society now. We are thinking and feeling much differently about transmissable disease among ourselves and our dogs than ever before. This article sheds light on the current situation in a thoughtful, balanced, responsible manner.
We look forward to serving our community in the coming days and weeks and fully expect that all of us will have a happy and healthy holiday season and a prosperous new year.
Thank you.
Making sense of the mystery illness found across the US Summary: As of early December, cases of canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC) have been seen by veterinarians in multiple states. While nationwide numbers are not known, Colorado, New Hampshire, and Oregon officials are working with state and federal veterinary diagnostic laboratorie...
Dear Friends of The Smiths Dog Lodge;
We hope all is well with you, your family, and your dogs.
As part of our ongoing efforts to understand and minimize or eliminate the risks associated with the upper respiratory "syndrome" present among the canine species in various parts of the country, including Colorado, we would like to pass along this NPR report we listened to just this morning while serving breakfast to our current boarders. First, an update.
At the Smiths Dog Lodge, we have NOT seen any symptoms of upper respiratory distress in the dogs attending daycare or boarding services at the lodge. Also, we have not heard any reports from our existing customers that their dogs have been exhibiting symptoms or have been "diagnosed" with this syndrome. We are open, providing regular services, and working daily to keep our facility safe. We have hundreds of active customer families that have used our services in recent months, and we continue to appreciate your willingness to stay alert and conscientious about what we are currently dealing with together. We depend on your help to provide a safe environment at the lodge. It's that simple. We honor and respect the decisions each of our customers will make in the coming days and weeks regarding the safety and well-being of their dogs.
What is more complex is the overall response concerning this respiratory illness that dogs in our community and elsewhere have suffered from. Everyone we have talked with is taking this issue very seriously. We have corresponded with many of our professional veterinary colleagues in the local area. We have read the results from studies in New Hampshire, an early "hot spot" for this illness. We have heard from the Colorado Department of Agriculture about their preliminary findings. There is no ONE explanation or set of recommendations the greater professional community is currently rendering. We expect to hear a more precise and concise definition of the problem in the near future. Until then, we will rely on gathering information from a wide variety of sources and taking a determined approach to best practices.
This report resonates with us. It lines up with our experience so far concerning this illness. It seems to accurately reflect a more considerable consensus regarding this illness and offers insight into how the greater community is responding to it. You can read or listen to the report by clicking below.
We are dog lovers here at the lodge, along with you. It is heartbreaking for us to know that any family's dog in our community or elsewhere has suffered from this illness. We will fight with you to keep our animals safe during this perplexing time.
We wish you all the best in the coming holiday season.
Veterinarians say fears about 'mystery' dog illness may be overblown. Here's why Reports of an "outbreak" of some as yet unidentified canine respiratory illness are scaring dog owners. But veterinarians and researchers aren't panicking.
