Meanwhile on Shackleford Banks -- A beach mystery! The park's biologist is wondering how a bright pink golf ball came to be on the sand in the interior of Shackleford Banks. Was someone practicing their bunker shots and lost track of it?

Turtle Time! Check out this great shot from a park volunteer. A momma turtle crawled in to lay a nest on the beach with the lighthouse in the background. After laying her nest, she had a bit of trouble getting back out to the ocean, possibly disoriented by the large pool of water in a low-lying area in the middle of the beach. However, the volunteer assured us that she eventually made it back out! The park is currently home to over 70 turtle nests, with more showing up daily!

Image Description: A crawl pattern with alternating flipper marks cuts through a sandy beach. There is a large area of disturbed sand at the top of the crawl pattern. A small pool of water breaks through the middle of the image, cutting the crawl pattern in half. The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is visible behind a dune line in the background of the image.

Since yesterday's post about the nesting turtle got so much attention, here's a follow up shot of her crawling the last few feet back to the ocean.

Image Description: An open sandy beach scene with small waves breaking on the shoreline. In the foreground, a large turtle with several barnacles on its shell crawls the last few feet forward toward the waves, leaving a track pattern behind. In the background, the rising sun crests just barely above the horizon, with sunlight breaking through light cloud cover and reflecting on the water.

Beach Treasures -- You never know what you will find on the beach when you go beach combing. On Sunday, July 23rd, a mother and son found this massive shark tooth on the beach during a beachcombing excursion on Cape Lookout. While we are not known for shark teeth on our beach, every once in a while they do show up, much to the delight of the finder. This tooth is an even rarer find. It belonged to a now-extinct shark species known as a Megalodon. If this is just one of its teeth, can you imagine how large the living animal was? (Scientists estimate that megalodon sharks were at least twice the size of today's Great White Sharks)
